People with a Disability

A commitment to equal opportunity employment

The Victorian Government is committed to ensuring its workforce is reflective of the community it serves. This includes increasing the employment of people with a disability and actively promoting awareness and understanding among government employers to create inclusive and diverse work environments.

We embrace inclusive employment as an equal opportunity employer. People with a disability are encouraged to apply for jobs in the Victorian Government. If you need help at any stage of the recruitment process contact the human resources branch in the department or agency, or the nominated contact officer for an advertised vacancy.

Disability Employment Advisory Service (DEAS)
The Disability Employment Advisory Service (DEAS) is a workforce program for the Victorian Public Service. DEAS aims to increase the number of people with a disability who work in Victorian Government departments. The service is designed to provide a supportive approach to employing people with a disability. It helps to ensure staff have the knowledge and tools to engage and retain a diverse workforce.

The DEAS provides a free service for jobseekers with a disability seeking employment within the Victorian public service, including advice and support for applicants and Victorian public service employers.

Candidates with a disability are encouraged to contact a recruitment expert from the DEAS for assistance to negotiate the recruitment process.

Recruitment Support
Applicants who meet job requirements are supported through key recruitment steps. DEAS refers suitably matched candidates with a disability to vacancies within departments for consideration. This is an inclusive approach which recognises the need to treat people differently to ensure they have the same opportunities as others. This is in line with merit-based selection.

As managers or selection panel members may not have recruited people with a disability before, DEAS provides support to hiring managers. Support includes questions to ask at interview and adjustments required. Where a candidate is successful, placement support such as assistance with workplace adjustments is provided.

Retention Support
DEAS also provides support to existing staff with a disability. Current employees with a disability and their managers can use the service to address any disability-related issues affecting their current employment.
