The Department of Justice and Community Safety Aboriginal Graduate Scheme is an exciting initiative which provides real employment pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates.

The department is now seeking Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander graduates from a range of disciplines and interests who are passionate about contributing to the future of Victoria's public sector. Successful completion of the Graduate program will ensure progression to an ongoing position.

What we offer

Our graduate scheme offers learning and development opportunities in an inclusive and supportive environment, which includes:

  • support from a dedicated Aboriginal Employment Team
  • access to the strong Aboriginal Employee Network and Aboriginal Youth Network (aged 18 to 26)
  • access to annual Cultural/Ceremonial and NAIDOC leave
  • access to the Aboriginal Career Development Program
  • and an ongoing, full-time VPS3 position upon successful completion of scheme.

Over the 12-month program, graduates will work on a number of current public issues, contributing to change across the wider community.

Graduate roles are available in the following employment streams:

  • Generalist stream
  • Data analytics stream
  • Law and legal stream
  • Project delivery stream

To be eligible to apply, you must:

  • be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person who; identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander is accepted by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community in which you live or have lived in
  • have completed your undergraduate or postgraduate degree or the same as level 7 and above of the Australian Qualifications Framework between 1 January 2018 and 1 January 2021 
  • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, an Australian permanent resident or have unrestricted working rights for ongoing work
  • not be on a temporary graduate visa
  • not have taken a voluntary redundancy from the Victorian public sector in the 3 years up to the program start date of 25 January 2021.

Our graduate recruitment process:

Stage 1: Complete the application form and upload resume

Stage 2: Behaviour interview and work sample

Stage 3: Pre-employment checks - the successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include national police checks and misconduct screening.

Stage 4: Job offer

This is an Aboriginal Designated Position, classified under 'special measures' of section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.
