About the Mental Health Department

Barwon Health, based in Geelong and one of the largest and most comprehensive regional health services in Australia, is seeking exceptional medical practitioners to join us as Psychiatry Trainees from February 2021.

We welcome applications from doctors wishing to commence psychiatry training and current trainees transferring from other areas. Successful applicants will join a cohort of 26 psychiatry registrars undertaking rotations within Barwon Health, Private Hospitals and Mercy Health in Werribee who are currently completing accredited psychiatry training with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP).

More information about our comprehensive psychiatry program at Barwon Health is available here: https://bit.ly/2yX1PcB

1st Year Trainees

We are seeking three first year trainees to join us in 2021. Successful trainees will be immersed in a positive, engaged culture where Registrars are challenged and supported to become exceptional Psychiatrists. We have very high exam success rates, and expect to guide you to completion of RANZCP training in the minimum five years. We provide an extensive variety of core and non-core RANZCP training rotations, all of which are supervised by accredited RANZCP Consultant Psychiatrist Supervisors. We are also passionate about education and research, with a strong connection with Deakin University School of Medicine and the Deakin University Psychiatric Research Unit (IMPACT Strategic Research Centre: https://goo.gl/j9i8Oq)

Transferring Trainees

We also accept a limited number of Trainees each year wishing to transfer their RANZCP training. Trainees wishing to transfer into our program must submit their RANZCP college training transcript with their application.

General information for applicants

Please submit all applications online including a detailed covering letter.

All applicants must be available to attend an interview in person.

All applicants must have general medical registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulatory Agency (AHPRA). Applicants who have been accepted for training by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists or who are current Trainees will be given preference.

We will consider applications from candidates overseas seeking specified Specialist Training (see http://www.ranzcp.org/Pre-Fellowship/Overseas-specialists/Specified-Training.aspx).

We are not currently accepting exemption candidates unless you are transferring from an existing placement. Other overseas candidates following the AMC exam pathway will not be considered unless they fulfil the requirements for entry into training with RANZCP and have applied for entry into training to commence February 2021.

Barwon Health’s services are underpinned by the five core values of respect, compassion, commitment, accountability and innovation. The successful application would be expected to embrace these core values both personally and in their work with staff, students, patients and families. Individuals considering applying are encouraged to refer to the Barwon Health Strategic Plan (https://bit.ly/2T5puhW) as the successful candidate will be expected to engage with the plan and assist with its implementation and ongoing development
