About the Service:
Our critical care specialty departments at the Royal Melbourne Hospital are currently seeking highly motivated Registered Nurses to join our teams. We are offering supported educational postgraduate nursing programs in our critical care areas. Please see more detailed department information below:
Cardiology (2B) - Graduate Certificate of Nursing Practice (Cardiac Care)- Deakin University
The RMH Coronary Care Unit (CCU) is part of the RMH Cardiology service providing care to emergency and elective patients requiring cardiac care. The RMH CCU is affiliated with Deakin University, and together offer a supported program- The Graduate Certificate of Nursing Practice (Cardiac Care). This course follows an established professional development framework which supports nurses in developing specialty knowledge, skills and professional behaviours required as a critical care nurse. The program length is 12 months.
Applicants must have minimum 1 year acute experience to apply.
Cardiothoracics (6SE)- Graduate Certificate of Nursing Practice (Cardiac Care)- Deakin University
The RMH Cardiothoracic ward is a 30 bed ward comprising of 12 High Dependency Unit and 18 stepdown beds. The Cardiothoracic Unit is affiliated with Deakin University, and together offer a supported program- The Graduate Certificate of Nursing Practice (Cardiac Care). The knowledge and skills you acquire from the program will enable you to deliver specialised nursing care for post-operative patients who have had heart and lung surgery, in both the ward and HDU environment. The program length is 12 months. Applicants must have minimum 1 year acute experience to apply
Catheter Laboratory- Graduate Certificate of Nursing Practice (Cardiac Care)- Deakin University
The RMH Cardiac Catheter Laboratories caters for patients undergoing elective and emergency cardiac procedures with a 24/7 on call service. Procedures include Coronary Angiogram, Pacing, Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), complex congenital structural intervention and a world leader in treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. The Catheter Laboratories are affiliated with Deakin University, and together offer a supported program- The Graduate Certificate of Nursing Practice (Cardiac Care). The program length is 12 months. Applicants must have minimum 1 year previous cardiac experience.
Emergency Department - Graduate Certificate in Critical Care Nursing (Emergency)
The Royal Melbourne Hospital Emergency Department is a busy and unique workplace whose team provides a high level of acute care in a multi-disciplinary setting. A Level 1 Adult Trauma and tertiary referral centre, with over 85,000 presentations annually. The service provides assessment, investigations and treatment of all patients who present and is part of a designated Major Trauma Service and has a high acuity case mix with an emphasis on Trauma, Infectious Disease, Chest Pain Evaluation, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry.
The RMH ED is affiliated with the University of Melbourne, and together offer a supported program- The Graduate Certificate in Critical Care Nursing (Emergency) (GCCCN). As a highly sought after program we have an ongoing commitment to internal professional development and as such we do not have any positions available to external staff for the January 2023 intake.

Intensive Care Unit- Graduate Certificate of Nursing Practice (Intensive Care)
The RMH Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a 42 bed unit, a level 1 trauma service and one of the biggest Intensive Care Units in Australia, providing care for complex critically unwell patients including cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, major trauma, complex respiratory management, sepsis, oncology, renal failure, infectious diseases, multiple organ dysfunction
The RMH ICU is affiliated with Deakin University, and together offer a supported program- The Graduate Certificate of Nursing Practice (Intensive Care). The program length is 12 months and applicants require a minimum 1 year previous acute experience, however 2 years of Acute Clinical experience is highly recommended.
