Addiction Psychiatry


GVAMHS has collaborated with Addiction Medicine services delivered through Goulburn Valley Alcohol and Drug Services (GVADS). At present there are avenues to gain experience in the field through postings in Adult Psychiatry and Consultation Liaison Psychiatry.  The service is in process of seeking accreditation for advanced training in Addiction Psychiatry.

The role is as an Advanced Trainee in Addiction Psychiatry and will be spent within GVAMHS and GVADS (GV Alcohol and Drugs Service) in managing clients with dual diagnosis and substance use/ addiction disorders and related clinical issues under supervision on a RANZCP accredited supervisor/s.

The Registrar will be predominantly based in Shepparton but may be required to work off site including clinics in Shepparton outside hospital campus, visiting Seymour, Tatura, Numurkah or Cobram district health services.


The basic and advanced training registrars are expected to adhere to the following guidelines in performing their training, work and other tasks as part of their role with GV Health. These principles are a guide only and the Registrars are encouraged to adapt to any new roles/ expectations from time to time depending on the needs of the organisation.


North-Central Victoria extending from the outer fringes of metropolitan Melbourne in the south, up to the Murray River in the north. The vision and commitment of our service is to be the leader in providing safe and quality mental health care to the rural community.

The psychiatry service is well developed and is currently accredited and funded for basic and advanced training positions. The service, which employs eleven FRANZCP consultant psychiatrists (eight full-time and three part-time), is keen on training the future generation of regionally based psychiatrists.

There is a 15-bed, adult inpatient unit and a five-bed old-aged psychiatry inpatient unit. There is also a 20-bed psycho geriatric nursing home.

  • Child and Youth Psychiatry

  • Early Psychosis Service

  • General Adult Psychiatry

  • Psychiatry of Old Age

  • Primary Mental Health Service

  • Perinatal Mental Health

  • Private Psychiatry

  • Consultation Liaison Psychiatric Services


GVAMHS is a teaching site for medical students training at the Rural Clinical School at the University of Melbourne at Shepparton. GVAMHS has an active academic and research environment with regular case conferences, presentations and publications. In the past eight years, staff have published more than 35 papers in national and international peer reviewed journals.

The successful applicant will have a current general registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a Medical Practitioner and Highly effective communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to relate positively with and appropriately with patients and others. GV Health are currently undergoing a $169 million redevelopment, this redevelopment will include a new renal dialysis unit, an expanded emergency department including satellite medical imaging, inpatient wards, extended theatre space, intensive care unit, a new kitchen, mortuary and the establishment of a Women’s and Children’s precinct featuring a new, special care nursery, paediatric ward and refurbished maternity ward.
