About the Role

Under supervision, the Apprentice Horticulturist will learn how to plan and deliver the horticultural maintenance, development, curation and conservation of plant collections and broader Gardens area. You will achieve this by applying horticultural techniques, selecting appropriate plants, ensuring a suitable growing environment, monitoring plant performance, and effective integrated pest management to achieve the highest standards of presentation. In addition, you will learn the process of plant identification, record keeping, monitoring for pests and disease and how to accurately convey horticultural information and advice to relevant stakeholders.

About You

The successful candidate will have a keen interest in horticulture, with a willingness and desire to learn about all aspects of this profession. You will have a customer-centric approach to work, with excellent communication skills and the practiced ability to speak to people of all backgrounds. You will approach work with a flexible, constructive and collaborative mindset, have good attention to detail and the confidence and curiosity to ask questions and seek clarification when needed. You bring a positive mindset and good work ethic to everything that you do and be prepared and willing to roll your sleeves up to any task. You are reliable, punctual and professional, and are now available to commit to a three-year apprenticeship with the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria. All other key selection criteria can be found in the position description which is located under the attachments heading on the Victorian Government Careers website.
