Assistant Principals at Wangaratta High School are a part of the School Leadership Team and are expected to develop their key responsibility areas in conjunction with other members of the team to ensure they are actively working to meet the goals and targets of the school’s Strategic Plan and Annual Implementation Plan. They perform their duties in collaboration with and as delegated by the principal. As a leader, they seek out and implement best practice, they have a whole School focus, and they actively promote their areas of responsibility. The Assistant Principals support the day-to-day operations of the school and develop and implement processes and procedures to encourage effective communication to students, parents and staff, and support the effective coordination of daily events and school operations, broadly and for their key areas of focus. They act as a point of escalation in matters of discipline, performance and interpersonal conflict. They promote and model health and safety across the School, with an emphasis on staff and student health and wellbeing and compliance with school and DET requirements.

Assistant Principal's have a visible presence on campus by leading assemblies and staff meetings, parent forums, information nights, staff briefings and community events. They support student leadership and prefect meetings as well as other meetings of students convened as necessary. They build alliances and networks with professional communities and other schools beyond Wangaratta High School.

All members of the Leadership Team at Wangaratta High School are expected to take a broad and active interest in all aspects of the School, always maintain professionalism, be prepared to liaise between home and school, and participate in a broad range of School activities. Assistant Principals at Wangaratta High School are expected to be role models as excellent classroom practitioners and will have a teaching load along with their leadership duties.


In recognition of the importance of exemplary practice for improved student learning outcomes, the key roles of the Assistant Principal (EiTL) may include but are not limited to:
1.Leadership, supervision and co-ordination of the work of leaders in curriculum, including the allocation of budgets, selection of staff to positions of leadership and other resources.2.Leadership and supervision of the delivery of teaching programs, including support for Learning Specialists, Graduate Teachers and Tutors3.Responsibility for general discipline matters beyond the management of classroom teachers and leaders of student management.
4.Contribute to the overall management of the school, ensuring compliance with VRQA registration, DET code of conduct and DET Values.5.Demonstrating high-level expertise in pedagogy and teaching and modelling exemplary classroom practices including: co-teaching demonstration lessons, observations, learning walks, walk-throughs and evidenced-based feedback to teaching staff on their teacher practice and peer collaboration.6.Working with the school leadership team to develop a shared view of high impact teaching strategies and excellence in teaching and learning, including determining the final form of proposals which go to school council.7.Modelling effective learning practice and supporting teachers to seek, analyse and act on feedback to inform their effectiveness and development. i.e the PLC model8.Modelling exemplary use of student data to inform teaching and assessment approaches that enable point of need teaching.9.Support the use of technology to support and enhance learning, engagement, creativity and achievement in the classroom. Support and lead digital systems that support the effective organisation of curriculum and teaching resources across the school.10.Developing and leading school-wide professional learning to support the school improvement work identified in the Annual Implementation Plan.11.Collaborating with the Principal Team to develop the instructional and shared leadership across the school.12.Other duties as directed by the Principal.
Building School Capacity and Culture School policies, procedures, approaches and learning culture
•Lead, manage, monitor, and improve all aspects related to improvement in teaching and learning.
•Provide transformational leadership in developing strategies, approaches and policies that will improve studentlearning. This will involve partnership with LAL and LS from across the School to develop whole school strategies andapproaches.
•Lead the improvement of the of whole school culture to one of serious study and application, with clear processesand procedures to monitor students’ work ethic and progress.
•Provide transformational leadership in supporting the effective 7-12 pathways planning and transition support forall students.
•Lead the collection and monitoring of NAPLAN and PAT data that impacts on students’ programs and results.
•Lead, manage and monitor targeted learning initiatives such as MYLNS and TLI.
•Support the work of the Learning Area Leaders (LAL) in implementing Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)and Instructional Model.
•Support the work of Learning Specialists to create and maintain data walls of students in Years 7-10.
Building Student Capacity
•Collaborate with the Learning Specialists (LS), MYLNS and TLI teachers to select students for targeted initiatives toimprove student outcomes in literacy and numeracy.
•Monitor the learning growth of students, particularly those in the bottom two bands to ensure suitable supportsare in place for these students to experience connection, engagement, and success.
•Develop any system processes and procedures that ensure underachieving and high achieving students areidentified, monitored, and supported.
•Support the development and implementation of Individual Education Programs (IEPs) for those students who arein targeted initiatives.
Building Parent and Community Capacity
•Brief students, parents, staff, and the community on developments in the area of targeted learning initiatives.
•Actively involve parents in case management meetings to identify how they can support their child’s progress.
•Investigate ways in which to include parents in the process of improving student engagement and performance.
•Be an active and contributing member of the School Leadership Team and School Improvement Team
•Supporting and working collaboratively and cooperatively with members of the Leadership Team and SchoolCouncil to ensure the successful fulfilment of Strategic Plan and Annual Implementation Plan goals and strategies.
•Other duties as directed by the Principal.
Coaching Responsibilities: The Assistant Principal is a role-model for effective pedagogical practice and professional leadership and therefore needs to be actively coaching staff across the school environment. The Assistant Principal (EiTL) will be required to conduct weekly coaching sessions with Learning Area Leaders and Learning Specialists. Strategic Plan / Annual Implementation Plan Responsibilities:
•The role of Assistant Principal (EiTL) will support the school improvement work specifically in the areas ofExcellence in Teaching and Learning.

To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class a person must have provisional or full registration from the Victorian Institute of Teaching. In addition, from 3 August 2020, to be eligible for employment in the principal class or teacher class, a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education program after 1 July 2016, must demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements. This condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian Initial Teacher Education program completed by the person.

Our School

Wangaratta High School (WHS) was established in 1909. So began a tradition of encouraging and supporting each student to be their best. To help each of them develop intellectually and socially to reach their full potential. And in doing so, give back to their local community.

A multi day transition program before commencement of Year 7 sets all students up for success. We are pleased with the way that our Year 7’s quickly develop a sense of ownership and pride over their environment and a sense of belonging and community amongst themselves and their teachers.

The Select Entry Accelerated Learning (SEAL) Program is an innovative program for highly able students that has been running successfully at Wangaratta High School for more than a decade. The program has attracted some of the brightest regional students who move through a section of the Year 7 - 9 curriculum at a faster pace in a separate class group. The Department of Education and Training introduced the SEAL Program into selected Victorian schools to help meet the needs of gifted and high achieving students. SEAL Academy schools provide quality and leading edge programs to their gifted and talented students. The SEAL program is well embedded at Wangaratta High School, and key part of the schools DNA.

As students transition into later years (Years 10-12) the opportunities to refine their pathways open up and students are provided with a diverse range of subjects from all areas of the VCE/VET and VCAL curriculums. Year 10 students are encouraged to undertake VCE/VET units of study to assist in preparing them for the rigors of a full VCE/VET program the following year.

Our Executive Principal

Our Executive Principal is Dave Armstrong B.A, Dip Ed, MBA, GAICD, MACEL, Vincent Fairfax Fellow. He has worked across the independent, public and international education sectors in Victoria, NSW and the NT – all in regional schools. He was most recently the Principal of Port Vila International School in Vanuatu. He is a passionate educational leader, driven by the desire to make a difference in the lives of others. He has strong background in school leadership, experiential and outdoor education, business education and wellbeing.
