Business Improvement Analyst

  • Annual Salary Range: $99,872 - $120,838 per annum plus superannuation (as per new VPS agreement 2020)
  • Tenure: Fixed Term - until 30 June 2023
  • Employment Type:  Full Time (the department provides flexible working arrangements)
  • Usual Work Location: 525 Collins Street, Melbourne CBD (currently work from home)


About the Team

The Business Integration and Improvement (BII) branch sits within the Business Operations & Improvement Division in the People and Business Services Group at the Department of Transport.

The team is responsible for the development, implementation and evolution of the Business Process Management and Continuous Process Improvement capability for the Department of Transport. This includes the objective of driving workflow integration across various entities within DoT and lifting operational efficiencies through process automation. The team is accountable to manage this capability as a centralised function driving process integration and improvement for critical DoT processes and functions but also to act in a hub-and-spoke function to coach process owners in the application of the DoT process improvement methodology. The process management and improvement capability is underpinned by a strong change management capability to ensure sustainable outcomes for DoT.

The team is expected to drive engagement with employees across all divisions by building a collaborative approach and a culture of continuously challenging the status quo to drive continuous improvement of quality, efficiencies and customer and employee satisfaction.


About the Opportunity

The primary purpose of this role is to identify, develop and manage business improvement opportunities and apply process automation solutions where applicable. This involves close interaction with subject matter experts, influencing key stakeholders and executing change management with operational functions.

This can be done in support of existing strategic projects which contain process automation elements or might be done through specific process improvement project assignments delivering end-to-end improvement and automation solutions with the business.  

The Business Improvement Analyst will contribute to the culture of Continuous Process Improvement at DoT and will support process leads across the organization on the application of these tools.


About you:

  • Proven experience in process automation using MS Power Automate and MS SharePoint. Knowledge about Nintex automation solutions is desired.
  • Strong understanding of continuous improvement methodology (i.e. Lean Six Sigma or similar methodology).
  • Solid understanding of project management to demonstrate capacity to achieve meaningful goals and undertake competing priorities within a dynamic environment. Proven track record on driving task and projects from initiation to completion. 
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills including demonstrated ability to negotiate and influence decisions at a senior management level.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate and execute continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities where processes and procedures can be improved to expedite business outcomes.
  • Proactive and self-starting, seizes opportunities and acts upon them. Takes responsibility for own actions.
  • Excellent conceptual and analytical ability. Uses analytical and conceptual skills to reason through problems. Has creative ideas and can project how these can link to innovations.



  • Degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Qualification in Project Management including traditional and agile methodologies.
  • Qualification in Lean Six Sigma or similar methodology e.g. Green Belt or Black Belt certification.
