About the Expert Working Group

The Youth Justice Strategic Plan 2020-2030 reflects a 10-year vision for the delivery of a leading youth justice system in Victoria. The Strategic Plan has a specific focus on supporting culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) groups in Youth Justice, through prevention and diversion, and helping to address the underlying drivers of offending of those already in the system.

The Victorian Government is establishing the Expert Working Group to support the above work. Under the Chair's leadership, the Expert Working Group will build trust, connection and strong relationships with the South Sudanese Australian community. It will do this through engagement with community organisations and community members, religious and local networks, parents and carers, and young people with lived experience. The Expert Working Group will support and grow an effective service sector through targeted investment to build capacity and to deliver programs and support.

About the role

The Expert Working Group will be supported by both the Chair and the Deputy Chair, the Principal Commissioner for Children and Young People. The Chair and Expert Working Group will be supported by departmental staff. An Advisory Group will provide support and advice to the Expert Working Group, including the Chair. Appointed by the Minister for Youth Justice, the Advisory Group will include representatives of South Sudanese and African Australian communities, key funded community sector organisations and advocacy bodies, relevant government departments, and established representative groups. The Chair will lead on drafting the Advisory Group's Terms of Reference, which will be developed in consultation with the South Sudanese Australian community.

Some of the key responsibilities of the Chair include:

  • Lead and facilitate community engagement activities with the South Sudanese Australian community, through direct work with young people, their families, parents and carers; the community; and community organisations
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the Deputy Chair of the Expert Working Group to deliver the three deliverables of the Expert Working Group
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the departmental secretariat team to implement the deliverables of the Expert Working Group.

Who we're looking for

To be successful in this role, you will have

  • Extensive knowledge of relevant community agencies and culturally specific services for young people of South Sudanese background involved with youth justice including mental health, education, training, employment, housing and alcohol and drugs.
  • Understanding of adolescent development, behaviour and the factors underpinning youth offending.
  • Thorough awareness and appreciation of the impact of pre and post migratory experiences of young South Sudanese Australians and their families
  • Be required to undergo and pass a Working with Children Check (if not already held)
