Occupation: Legal

Salary Range: $52,939 - $71,996

Work location: Melbourne | CBD

We have revised our current program to create more flexibility and access to the program while working off-site. Therefore, we have introduced a pre-clerkship stage which will take place remotely and provide foundational knowledge and an introduction to the work of VLA.

  • Learning and development opportunity for First Nations students at any stage of their law degree
  • Gain valuable hands-on experience across our various practice areas
  • Part time, equivalent of two days per week from 26 July to late August 2021
  • Salary $51,896 per annum pro rata

About the Program:
VLA is committed to progressing our vision for reconciliation in Australia and our clerkship provides a unique opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander law students to learn on the job while developing their practical legal skills and knowledge.

As a result of continued restrictions in Victoria and the changes to the way VLA deliver services, we have revised our current program to create more flexibility and access to the program while working off-site. Therefore, we have introduced a pre-clerkship stage which will take place remotely and provide foundational knowledge and an introduction to the work of VLA. This will include a combination of flexible e-modules that can be completed at your preferred time during the week and interactive sessions that will occur in real time.

The second stage of the program is expected to take place later in the year and will consist of an in-person placement which may include shadowing VLA lawyers in the duty lawyer list, watching lawyers appear in courts and tribunals, undertaking legal research and tasks, and sitting in on advice sessions with clients.

About you:
We are seeking values driven law students who have an interest in developing a career within the legal assistance sector (e.g. Victoria Legal Aid, Community Legal Centre's, Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service or Family Violence Prevention and Legal Service) and a strong commitment to making a positive impact in their community.

It is expected that clerks will be available to commence our pre-clerkship stage remotely on Monday 26 July, and that participants will be self-motivated, prepared to work on research tasks on their own, and participate in team activities.

VLA considers that being Aboriginal and/or a Torres Strait Islander person is a genuine occupational requirement for this position under subsection 26(3) or section 28 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic).

How to apply:
Submit a current resume with details of at least one referee, complete the attached candidate application form (listed within the file attachments as a Word document), and provide confirmation of enrolment in a law degree.

You must also provide information that supports your identity as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person – this might be a Confirmation of Aboriginality document or some other letter from an Aboriginal community controlled organisation where you are from, your university or where you now live. We understand this can be a challenge at times so please let us know if this is a barrier and we can discuss a suitable alternative.

For further information please refer to the attached position description, or contact Lauren Steers-Lemai, Acting Strategic Resourcing Manager on (03) 9269 0463, or Steph McStay, First Nations Employment Consultant on 03 9269 0496.

Applications close at 11.59pm on Monday 21 June 2021.

To protect your safety and the health and safety of our staff, interviews for this role will take place online. If shortlisted for an interview you will be provided with further information about the process.
