The Monash Medical Centre Emergency Department is introducing a new inter-professional team which brings together clinicians from mental health, alcohol and other drug (AOD) and the ED to provide specialised and integrated care to patients presenting to the ED with high acuity mental health and AOD issues, and complex psychosocial needs. This service is called the Mental Health and AOD Response (Engage Team) and is located in the emergency department. The team will provide a seven day a week, extended hours service, as well as an assertive outreach function that supports people following discharge for up to 28 days.

About the Role

The ED Mental Health & AOD Response Coordinator is a senior leadership role within the emergency department, with clinical and operational oversight for implementing and monitoring the agreed ED Mental Health & AOD Response model of care. The ED Response Coordinator assists the senior leadership team in ED to provide effective leadership and coordination of behavioural health care services within the ED.

The Coordinator will have line management responsibility for Engage Team clinicians and will provide direction, supervision and guidance to this staffing group. The ED Response Coordinator will develop positive working relationships with ED, Mental Health and AOD staff to build an integrated model of care within the ED and the assertive outreach function.  The Coordinator will provide ongoing monitoring and review of the service according to agreed KPIs.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Lead and support the implementation of Phase 1 of the ED Mental Health and AOD Response Model of Care including the non-admitted and assertive outreach service

  • Lead the development and coordination of a collaborative inter-professional team response for people presenting to the Monash Medical Centre Emergency Department with Mental Health and AOD issues.

  • Implement and support the provision of assertive outreach and engagement with identified consumers for up to 28 days following discharge from the ED to facilitate assessment, referral and access to community supports consistent with the person’s goals.

  • Provide oversight, guidance and supervision to staff providing assertive outreach and develop processes to support safety and monitoring.

  • Develop, foster and maintain partnerships and referral pathways with relevant community agencies to facilitate discharge from ED and enhance community linkages and service delivery.

About you

You are an experienced mental health clinician (RPN, OT, SW) with proven leadership qualities and excellent communication skills. You have experience working in acute mental health settings and/or the emergency department. You have a passion for improving the experience of care for people in crisis and delivering services that respect  individuals' rights, preserves their dignity, and promotes recovery and inclusion. What you need:

  • Registered Nurses: Post Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing or completion of a specialist undergraduate psychiatric nursing program or specialist post basic course of training which previously led to registration as a Division 3 Nurse

  • Social Workers: An Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) accredited Bachelor Degree or entry level Master’s Degree of Social Work that provides eligibility for membership of the AASW.

  • Occupational Therapists: Possess an approved qualification in Occupational Therapy and registered with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

  • Relevant experience in the provision of leadership, clinical advice and advocacy for patients presenting in crisis with mental health, AOD and/or psychosocial needs.

  • Outstanding communication skills

  • Current AHPRA registration
