CONSULTANT PSYCHIATRIST


An exciting opportunity exists for a dynamic and enthusiastic Consultant Psychiatrist to join our Specialty Mental Health Services on an ongoing basis, working on the Community Brain Disorders Assessment & Treatment Service (CBDATS) at the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre in Kew.

Austin Health's Mental Health Division incorporates a number of specialities and services across community and bed-based services, with inpatient beds located on all three campuses.  The Division provides catchment-based area mental health services, in addition to a number of regional and state-wide specialty services.


The consultant psychiatrist positions are important leadership roles within the organisation.  The Consultant Psychiatrist will be fundamental to team cohesion, a quality focused, person centred approach and working with a team of professionals to make a real difference to consumers impacted by mental health difficulties.


CBDATS is a state wide mobile consultative and treatment service providing support for consumers with the dual diagnosis of Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) or neurodegenerative disease and psychiatric disorders.


CBDATS provides a supportive, flexible and responsive service which is sensitive to the needs of its clients.  A high standard of support and consultation within the rehabilitation process is provided, with the view to promoting the brain disordered persons most adaptive level of functioning within the community.  Primarily, the service takes the form of assessment, brief intervention, treatment, referral and liaison.  The CBDATS team provides specialist, time-limited secondary consultation to services including acute and continuing care mental health services, residential care services and both government and non-government organisations. CBDATS is the referral point for the Brain Disorders Unit and Step 2 program and will refer appropriate clients to the inpatient team. CBDATS will also provide time-limited follow-up to following discharge from these programs.

To be successful for this role you must: 



  • Be a registered Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

  • Hold a Fellowship of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), or equivalent

  • Have appropriate training and experience applicable to the field of Psychiatry

  • Demonstrate a commitment to high quality patient care

  • Demonstrate a commitment to working as a team member with peer medical, junior medical, nursing and other clinical staff to provide efficient, safe and quality care across the continuum

  • Demonstrate an understanding of Clinical Governance, and

  • Demonstrate a commitment to teaching, training and research.
