An exciting and rare opportunity has become available to the right candidate looking to work in an excellent multidiscipline team as the Clinical Lead overseeing the 5 specialist inpatient beds devoted to the treatment of patients with significant eating disorders. These beds represent one of only three public inpatient units for the treatment of people with eating disorders. The team work within a model of collaborative skills based learning and individualised treatment plans.


These beds represent the inpatient part of the Body Image Eating Disorder Treatment and Recovery Service, which is a joint collaboration providing a continuum of care across inpatient and outpatient services for eating disorders between St Vincent’s and Austin Health.


The Eating Disorder consultant will work under the clinical direction of the BETRS Clinical Director, as well as reporting operationally to the Clinical Director of Adult Services and Professionally to the Medical Director of Austin Health, Mental Health Division.


The consultant psychiatrist will oversee the overarching clinical needs of this inpatient group and ensures that the therapeutic milieu is effective, evidence based and safe. The successful candidate will lead the Eating Disorders Treatment Team so that they feel supported working with this challenging patient group and their carers. Provide supervision and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level and according to RANZCP requirements. The consultant will also liaise with Paediatric and CYMHS services at the Austin to ensure ease of transition of patients who may be needing to have treatment within the adult services.


To be successful for this role you must:



  • Be a registered Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

  • Hold a Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), or equivalent

  • Have appropriate training and experience applicable to the field of Psychiatry

  • Experience in providing services to people with eating disorders

  • Demonstrate a commitment to high quality patient care

  • Demonstrate a commitment to working as a team member with peer medical, junior medical, nursing and other clinical staff to provide efficient, safe and quality care across the continuum, and

  • Demonstrate a commitment to teaching, training and research.
