The successful applicant will influence the modernisation of the lifecycle management of Vicmap by developing machine learning algorithms, training and test sets that provide efficient and automated solutions to currently manual processes

Are you interested in working on arguably the most exciting digital innovation program in the Victorian public service right now?  
The Digital Twin Victoria (DTV) team are on the look-out for talented, passionate people to join our growing team. Over the next three years DTV will be building the most comprehensive collection of rich, 3D spatial data ever assembled for Victoria. 
This exciting new role will make a critical contribution to the program's success through the sourcing and creation of new datasets for Machine Learning, and play a key role in the delivery of Vicmap Response - enhancing spatial data to improve situational awareness and emergency response for Victoria's Emergency Services sector.
Reporting to the Manager, Vicmap Labs & Portfolio, you will be responsible for: 

  • Leveraging the state's extensive spatial, a-spatial and aerial imagery datasets to deliver new Vicmap data products through Machine Learning
  • Working with DELWP and Victorian emergency services to solve pressing real-world data problems that will lead to improved emergency response outcomes
  • Champion and take a leadership role towards the adoption of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence techniques within the department 
  • Work with an incredible agile team on the delivery of Digital Twin Victoria, ensuring the benefits of innovation and new technology are realised.  

Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications

  • A relevant tertiary education, for example, in mathematics, statistics data science, or information systems/computer science with a focus on data analytics and demonstrated data literacy is required.
  • 5+ years of industry experience, particularly on the application of Advanced Analytics in the following areas:
    • Image processing and computer vision, particularly for aerial imagery and remote sensing data (highly regarded)
    • Timeseries analysis (e.g., seasonal decomposition, autoregressive models, etc.)
    • Spatial data analysis (e.g., resampling, regression, etc.)
    • Graph and network analysis (e.g., connectivity, centrality, etc.)
    • Demonstrated experience in producing high-quality code and reproducible results:
      • Proficiency in Python and SQL, and experience in a broader array of programming languages such as Java and R also considered.
      • Proficiency in major Data Science packages (e.g., numpy, scikit-learn) and Machine Learning frameworks (e.g. Tensorflow, PyTorch, XGBoost, etc.)
      • Ability to write modular, well-documented code and unit tests.
      • Knowledge of version control (git preferred).
      • Experience using ML pipelines (e.g., sklearn.pipelines, TFX, Airflow, etc) to ensure ML results are tractable, reproducible and auditable.
      • Experience in parallel and distributed computing is highly regarded.
      • Proficiency in the theory and practice of statistics and machine learning algorithms, including but not limited to the following:
        • Neural networks (Deep Learning, CNN, RNN, etc.)
        • Unsupervised learning
        • Random Forests
        • Explainability

This is a fixed term position available for a period until 31 December 2023
