The Mental Health Tribunal (MHT) is an independent statutory tribunal established under the Mental Health Act 2014 (the Act). The Tribunal is an essential safeguard under the Act to protect the rights and dignity of people with severe mental illness who are receiving compulsory treatment. The primary function of the Tribunal is to determine whether the criteria for compulsory mental health treatment, as set out in the Act, apply to a person. If all criteria apply to an individual person then the Tribunal makes a Treatment Order specifically for that person.

The Tribunal receives funding and administrative support from the Department of Health (DH). Staff are DH employees who report directly or indirectly to President of the Tribunal. The Tribunal consists of an administrative arm, staffed by VPS employees, and Tribunal members, who are governor-in-council appointees.

Deputy Registrar - Tribunal VPS Staff

Reporting to the Registrar, the Deputy Registrar is responsible for the effective listing and coordination of Mental Health Tribunal hearings, Tribunal member support, the management of associated documentation including the statutory register of the tribunal, and some case management under supervision of the Registrar.  The position requires a highly motivated individual who is committed to the highest level of client service, is able to set priorities and work under pressure.
