Exciting new senior leadership role at Victoria Legal Aid

  • Newly created leadership position
  • Play a critical role in Victoria's civil legal assistance services
  • Key member of Senior Leadership Team

About the organisation
Victoria Legal Aid provides free legal information and education to all Victorians, with a focus on prevention and early resolution of legal problems. It advocates for equality, enabling people to protect their rights and promotes accountability of systems. Victoria Legal Aid's vision is for a fairer, stronger and more inclusive community. Together with partners in the legal and community sectors, and with clients and consumers at the centre, the Civil Justice directorate uses the law so people can access justice and secure better, fairer outcomes in relation to issues that affect their lives, including their housing, income, mental and physical health, visa status and ability to live and work free from discrimination. Civil Justice conducts strategic litigation to change policies and processes and remedy legal problems for individuals and the broader community.

About the role
Reporting to the Executive Director, Civil Justice, Access and Equity, the Director, Civil Justice, leads the Civil Justice directorate in the delivery of legally aided civil law services across the State. This new role addresses the diverse civil legal and related needs of a broad range of clients, by providing legal assistance and non-legal advocacy through Victoria Legal Aid's in-house practice and other legal assistance providers. The role oversees four Civil Justice sub-programs in Mental Health and Disability Advocacy (comprising Mental Health and Disability Law and Independent Mental Health Advocacy), Migration, Equality Law and the Economic and Social Rights Program. Recognising that Victoria Legal Aid cannot assist everyone, the Director, Civil Justice prioritises strategic advocacy to influence changes to laws, policies and systems so that they work in a fairer way.

About you
To succeed in this role you will have strong leadership and communication skills and a demonstrated track record operating as a member of a senior leadership team to drive strategic priorities and influence cultural change and law reform. Tertiary qualified in law, public policy or a related field, you possess a detailed understanding of civil law and a proven ability to develop and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders in complex, client first service delivery contexts. You are committed to VLA's vision and values that are focused on a fair and just society and making a difference in the lives of clients and the community. This includes a demonstrated understanding of the issues affecting VLA's diverse clients including those living with disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and clients with mental health consumer experience.
