The Yoo-rrook Justice Commission (Yoo-rrook) is looking for an experienced senior leader to play a key role in the effective operation of the Commission.

Yoo-rrook has been established as an independent Royal Commission under the Inquiries Act 2014. It will focus on truth-telling and healing for First Peoples, by inquiring into historic and ongoing systemic injustices perpetrated against First Peoples in Victoria by State and non-State entities since colonisation until today. Yoo-rrook is the first Aboriginal truth-telling body to be established in Australia. See here to see the letters patent that set out Yoo-rrook's historic mandate.

As the Director, Strategic Policy and Research, you will lead and manage the Policy and Research team to deliver high quality, evidence based, authoritative evidence to support the writing of formal strategic advice to Yoo-rrook.

You will drive the research and policy program of work, including the collection, collation and commissioning of research, the development of background and position papers to inform Commissioners, as well as providing expert strategic advice to Commissioners, the CEO and senior executives about current, evolving and emerging issues to facilitate decision making and the direction of deliverables.

Key to your success in this role will be your ability to collaborate and work closely with other members of the executive team to facilitate interconnections across the organisation and support achievement of Yoo-rrook's truth-telling objectives.

This is a fixed-term role until 30 June 2024.

About you

  • research experience in the areas of First Nations history and/or socio-economic/political and legal/justice systems, including systemic reform

  • strong conceptual, research, policy and analytical skills, with demonstrated ability to synthesise large volumes of information from a range of sources to produce clear and comprehensive written products

Experience working with Aboriginal communities and organisations, and/or an understanding and awareness of Aboriginal self-determination and cultural safety, and/or a qualification (Masters or PhD) in history, social sciences, public policy, law, economics or related disciplines would be advantageous.
