About Us

The Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) is responsible for promoting community safety through the effective management and provision of rehabilitation and reparation opportunities to prisoners and offenders under custodial and community-based supervision.

Corrections Victoria manages some 50 Community Correctional Services locations across the state and is responsible for managing Victoria's 11 public prisons and a transition centre, as well as overseeing the contracts relating to the management of three privately operated prisons.

Beechworth Correctional Centre (BCC) is a male, minimum security correctional centre located approximately 300km from Melbourne in North East Victoria, within the Hume Region of DJCS. 

About the Role

The Disability Support Officer provides support to prisoners with disability and complex needs. The position is particularly focused on prisoners with cognitive impairment, psycho-social disability and other complex needs associated with disability.

The Disability Support Officer will work directly with prisoners and with other prison staff to enhance the capability of staff to support prisoners with disability.

Some of the key components of the role are to:

  • work with prisoners with complex needs during the COVID19 crisis to ensure understanding and risk mitigation
  • provides support to prisoners with disability and complex needs
  • work with staff to ensure appropriate support is available for prisoners with disability.

This is a part time 0.5FTE, fixed-term position, provided so that prisoners with disability and complex needs are supported to understand the implications of the COVID-19 virus and to adopt behaviours that minimise the risk of contracting or spreading COVID-19.

About You

As our ideal candidate, you will possess:

  • demonstrated experience in working with people with disability and complex needs
  • excellent interpersonal skills, ability to engage with and understand, empathise and understand the needs of the client
  • strong problem solving skills, following logical, suitable and timely decision making
  • ability to manage projects, apply sound project management methods and techniques
  • qualifications in disability studies, occupational therapy, social work or psychology will be highly regarded.
