About the role

The Family Support  Worker will provide high-quality psycho-social  family / carer support  services to people referred to the Brief Intervention Team. The position will promote the principles and practice of recovery, using the Collaborative Recovery Model, and effectively engage the person and their family / carers  in order to support their recovery towards their best hopes and preferred future. The position will focus on provision of family / carer focused service responses and will work in parallel with the clinical team suporting the consumer on their recovery journey. This is an exciting opportunity to utilise family work skills to provide support to family/ carers and improve individual and family functioning and outcomes.

About you

To be successful in this role you should possess:

• A tertiary mental health or related qualification (Social Work, Welfare, Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Disability Services, Community Development, Nursing or related discipline)


• Demonstrated experience in the mental health field, with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in the mental health setting including experinece working with families


• Demonstrated commitment to high quality care and ability to practice utilising the recovery approach in mental health


• Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with consumers and their families, and capacity to deal with a range of co-morbidity and complexity


• Capacity to develop effective working relationships, collaborations and partnerships with a range of service providers


• A sound working knowledge of and commitment to, working with diverse communities and providing services that are family and gender sensitive.


• Demonstrated ability to work with people who have: attempted suicide/ have a dual diagnosis /have a  mental illness/ family violence/ child protection issues


• Knowldge of family focused approaches such a single session family consultations, Let's talk about children intervention, family therapy and/ or family psychoeducation is desirable


• A working knowledge of community-based and government organisations


• Demonstrated knowledge of legislation relevant to clinical community mental health practice


• The ability to work as part of a diverse team


• Excellent communication and organisational skills


• A current Victorian driver’s licence is essential


• A current Victorian Working with Children Check is required
