Two 12-month fellowships - both commencing in February 2022

The Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital is a world leader in the provision of eye, ear, nose and throat services, education, research and health promotion for the community. Our mission is to provide highly specialised care by setting international standards of quality, innovation and efficiency.

The Vitreoretinal (VR) Unit at The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital is the largest VR unit in Australia. There are twelve visiting Vitreoretinal surgeons and the clinical exposure is wide, ranging from acute management of retinal detachments and posterior segment trauma, to elective procedures such as macular surgery. In addition to VR exposure, the fellows attend the Ocular Oncology Clinic, Medical Retina Clinic, laser lists and medical retina injection clinics, and liaise closely with the Ocular Immunology Clinic.  There are two to three vitreoretinal consulting clinics each week.

The Fellows are expected to attend the clinics, assess patients and discuss and plan their management with the consulting staff.

There are three to five operating sessions per week, as well as emergency operating sessions.  The Fellows participate in surgery, both as the operating surgeon or the assistant, depending on the complexity of the case. Fellows can expect to perform 400-600 cases as primary surgeon and should be able to manage a complete range of vitreoretinal conditions by the end of their year, including retinal detachments, macular surgery, trauma, endophthalmitis and vitreoretinal manifestations of diabetic eye disease.

Fellows will participate in the Unit’s busy on-call roster. This is generally on an alternate week basis, with provisions for annual and conference leave.

Salary and conditions of employment will be in accordance with the Australian Medical Association (Victoria) Doctors-in-Training Agreement 2018 - 2021
