Selection Criteria

Undertakes routine tasks that are usually carried out under close supervision and direction.  Work that carries some degree of independence will generally involve a limited number of tasks performed on a regular basis where priorities are clear, procedures are well established and direction is readily available.

Work has little scope for deviation. Problems can usually be solved by reference to well documented procedures and instructions and clearly established practices.  Deviation from established procedures will require reference to others for guidance and direction.  Assistance is readily available when problems arise.  An experienced employee at range 1 will exercise limited judgement within clearly defined guidelines and well established practices that relate specifically to the tasks performed.

Does not carry responsibility for the work of others.  More experienced employees will provide basic guidance and advice to others relating to tasks within the work area.

An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor.  Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employee's position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

Qualification requirements do not operate at range 1.  Certification requirements may be required to legally perform specific tasks - e.g. driver's licence, first aid, safe food handling.


Food Technology Assistant Profile: The task of the Food Technology assistant is to work in consultation and as a support to the Food Technology/Textiles staff. They are required to assist teachers in the classes requested, help particular students carry out the tasks they are set, and to perform the following duties.

Responsibilities include:

  • To be in the kitchen during practical classes by arrangement with the Food Technology teacher.
  • To prepare for each practical class and demonstration, according to the requirements requested by the subject teacher, in particular the portioning of ingredients required and setting up of laboratory tests for VCE and other levels.
  • To maintain Food Technology resources eg. photocopying of work sheets, vertical files, reference books, class sets, resource ordering etc
  • To collect food orders, total them, check the pantry and purchase goods as required.
  • To co-ordinate the ordering and storage of ingredients required for practical sessions. To maintain these storage areas in a clean and orderly manner, eg. pantry, crockery, cupboards and refrigerators, etc.
  • To supervise the linen for classes and be responsible for the laundering of such items. Dish cloths and tea towels to be changed after each lesson and washed each day where appropriate.
  • To be responsible for oven maintenance and other large appliances. To organise the repairs and servicing via the Head of Faculty as necessary.
  • To assist the class teacher with the preparation and cleaning up of the Food Technology Centre.
  • To disinfect and clean bins, bench tops and sinks each week and to sweep and mop the floor on a regular basis.
  • To maintain equipment in good working order, arranging for the replacement of broken or lost items as well as the correct labelling of equipment with colour coding.
  • To prepare accounts and pass onto the Faculty Coordinator at the end of each month.
  • To keep a record of expenditure throughout the year as well as an inventory of large appliances and equipment.
  • Where the department has agreed to cater for a school function, the Food Technology assistant would help in the planning and preparation.
  • To assist in the maintenance of a pleasant, clean, safe and healthy environment day to day. Including the food storage areas being cleaned thoroughly each term. as well as refrigerators emptied of unnecessary food stuffs and cleaned out on a regular basis. Freezers to be defrosted at the end of each term and foods checked for their use by dates.

Daily Basis:

Prepare ingredients and equipment for practical classes and or demonstrations.

Portioning of ingredients as required.

Wash and replace dishcloths and tea towels.

Clean bench tops and sinks.

Empty bins.

Sweep kitchen floor and mop if necessary.

Store and dispose of unused food stuffs.

To replenish supplies.

To ensure appliances are turned off and the room secured.

To locate equipment for staff and students where requested by teaching staff.

To purchase and collect fresh food supplies as required.

Weekly Basis:

Ensure stoves are clean.

Co- ordinate ordering and storage of ingredients.

Re fill detergent bottles, maintain in good condition sponges, scourers etc.

Tidy storage areas.

Remove unwanted food items from refrigerators.

Sort and tidy of student drawers and bench equipment.

General cleaning of area.

To stock control. Disinfect rubbish bins.

Ensure all work areas and equipment are clean.

Clean windows.

Check supplies / ingredients and collate food orders with class teachers and Faculty Coordinator including replenish, pick up supplies as required.

General laundering of school items eg, phys ed uniforms, table cloths, sick bay linen etc

Twice each Term:

Dust and oil sewing machines, general tidy up of storeroom and cupboards in Textiles room.

End of Term:

Stoves, food storage areas, freezers, pantry etc. to be cleaned thoroughly.

Bleach/ disinfect dish cloths / tea towels.

Clean chairs, vinyl aprons/ tables etc.

Organise replacement and /or repair of broken or lost equipment

Check student drawers and benches and colour code new equipment as required.

Clean windows.

Check stock and condition of linen (some mending may be required ) 

 End of Year:

As for end of term also-

Organising servicing of large appliances eg. stoves, driers, washing machine etc.

Maintain and update inventory of equipment.

Other Duties:

Other duties from time to time may be allocated by the head of Faculty and by the School Principal.

The Food Technology Assistant position requires:

Flexible time schedule to meet the changing school needs.

Ability to relate positively with staff and students and work cooperatively as part of a team.

Other Information

This position is fixed term, part time 21 hours per week (Three days). Rostered days are Wednesday, Thusrday, Friday.   The successful applicant must have a current Working With Children Check (E - Employee), Food handling certificate and hold or be prepared to undertake Anaphylaxis Training, Mandatory Reporting, OHS Modules, prior to or upon commencement.
