This is a unique opportunity for motivated team players who have an interest in learning and developing specialist skills in fire prevention works including forest fuel and mechanical treatment, and operating machinery. Opportunity to learn and deliver forest management activities in Victoria’s State forests and national parks. Contribute to Strategic Fuel Breaks and Mechanical Works program.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) will be implementing the Strategic Fuel Breaks and Mechanical Works program, this is a key adaptation action to respond to more frequent, intense and damaging bushfires. The program will build and upgrade 1,447 kilometres of fuel breaks.

The Forest and Fire Operations Officer focuses on strategic fuel break construction and mechanical treatment of bushfire fuels in high-risk areas. Responsibilities will also include plant operation, supervision of contractors, delivery of quality assessments and reporting and support field marking to ensure the protection of community values and assets.  

This role may involve being deployed locally to undertake emergency response and planned burning activities. These activities require a high level of fitness, as the work environment can be steep and remote from vehicles. 

Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of heavy plant operations in forested areas, prior forest fuel and mechanical treatment experience is desirable.
  • Experience and understanding of contractor supervision and delivery of project specifications is desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience working with and leading people is desirable.

Applicants must hold a current manual Drivers Licence (conditions A, I & V not acceptable for employment).  

This is a fixed term position available until 30 June 2022. This position is located in Castlemaine.
