Selection Criteria

Role

Leading teachers will be highly skilled classroom practitioners and undertake leadership and management roles commensurate with their salary range.  The role of leading teachers is to improve the skill, knowledge and performance of the teaching workforce in a school or group of schools and to improve the curriculum program of a school.

Typically, leading teachers are responsible for coordinating a number of staff to achieve improvements in teaching and learning which may involve the coordination and professional support of colleagues through modelling, collaborating and coaching and using processes that develop knowledge, practice and professional engagement in others.

Leading teachers are expected to lead and manage a significant area or function within the school with a high degree of independence to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the school's education program.

Leading teachers will be expected to make a significant contribution to policy development relating to teaching and learning in the school. A leading teacher has a direct impact and influence on the achievement of the school goals.

Leading teachers are usually responsible for the implementation of one or more priorities contained in the school strategic plan.

Responsibilities

The Head of Middle School is an integral component of the College Student Engagement and Wellbeing Team and will work closely with the Level Coordination teams at Years 7, 8 and 9 and the Transition Coordinator. The Head of Middle School will also work closely with the Careers Pathway Coordinator, the Work Experience, VET/VCAL Coordinator and the International Student Coordinator.  

The Head of Middle School is accountable to the Assistant Principal responsible for Wellbeing.

Leading Teacher: Professional Practice

Leading teachers are responsible for the implementation of one or more priorities contained in the school strategic plan. Typically, leading teachers coordinate a large number of staff to achieve improvements in teaching and learning so as to directly impact on student wellbeing, connectedness and achievement. By managing a PDP team, a leading teacher has a direct impact and influence on the achievement of the school goals and the professional development of teachers.

Leading teachers will be expected to model a strong commitment to personal leadership growth and contribute

to policy development relating to teaching and learning in the school.

Leading teachers will actively contribute to events in the Accountability Cycle by leading discussions, recording and providing information required for the School Council Annual Report, Annual Implementation Plan,

Self-Evaluation, Review and Strategic Plan.

 

The Head of Middle School responsibilities:

  • Model outstanding classroom teaching practice and undertake leadership and management roles commensurate with their salary range.
  • Be an advocate and driver of the East Doncaster Secondary College improvement strategies as outlined in College policy documents of practice in the Teaching and Learning, Staff Operations and Student Wellbeing Handbooks
  • Lead a Professional Development Team
  • Have a focus on the promotion and support of excellence in Teaching and Learning in the Middle School.
  • Lead the Middle School Coordination team and support them with the management of students within the Middle School.
  • Lead the Coordination team in caring for the overall wellbeing of students in the Middle School, including ensuring students feel supported and safe.
  • Set expectations for students in the Middle School in relation to uniform, behaviour, and the upholding of school values and communicate these in the appropriate forums. (Assemblies, emails, Compass notices)
  • Oversee and manage staff compliance with College policies and procedures.
  • Oversee and publicise Middle School events.
  • Conduct Professional Workshops for Staff
  • Ensure that College processes result in effective communication between parents, teachers and Wellbeing staff.

Who May Apply

Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.

VIT LANTITE

To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class a person must have provisional or full registration from the Victorian Institute of Teaching. In addition, from 3 August 2020, to be eligible for employment in the principal class or teacher class, a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education program after 1 July 2016, must demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements. This condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian Initial Teacher Education program completed by the person.

Vaccination Requirement

A person is not eligible for employment in the Teaching Service unless that person meets the vaccination requirements on commencement in the position.

Role

The Head of Middle School role:

The Head of Middle School will have responsibility for the following activities:

  • Meeting with the Leadership Team and members of the Wellbeing team.
  • Leading the Middle School Coordination Team (Years 7 to 9) 
  • Actively promote and lead innovation in the areas of Teaching and Learning and Student Wellbeing and connectedness within the College.
  • Administration associated with students in the Middle School including admissions, attendance, Student Engagement and Wellbeing.
  • Implement policies associated with Victorian Curriculum, ALPHA and ILP’s.
  • Oversee the Transition process from Grade 6 to Year 7 and as students move through Middle School and to Senior School.
  • Monitor student performance and ensure there is regular, effective communication of student performance to parents.
  • Coordinate and deliver Professional Workshops for staff on key improvement strategies for Teaching and Learning and Student Wellbeing and Engagement.
  • Work with staff to improve teaching practice and to respond to student and community demands.
  • Prepare and publish articles relating to Middle School for College Publications
  • Oversee Middle School and Year Level activities and programs relating to Wellbeing, Student Enrichment, Leadership and Teaching and Learning.
  • Establish and sustain valuable relationships with local schools and community organisations to ensure East Doncaster continues to be connected and respected in the wider community.
