The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is one of four tertiary referral unit in Melbourne, providing care for sick and premature babies across Victoria. On average 1600 premature and medically very sick babies are admitted each year. The Neonatal Service also plays a key role in providing education and training for local, national and international health professionals and has an extensive research program that includes long term care follow up 

The Women’s NICU is a 54 bed unit made up of 27 Level six cots and 32 Level 3-5 cots. The NICU model of care is designed to keep mothers and babies together, underpinned by several principles including: consistency, continuity of care and the engagement of families.

The Neonatal Hospital in the Home (NHITH) is a program that allows some babies to continue hospital care in their own home with their parents, supported by regular visits and phone calls by neonatal nurses.
In partnership with the NICU multidisciplinary team they will coordinate the and support babies and their families transitioning from hospital  to home and any other special care needs that babies will require.

The NHITH nurses are neonatal intensive care trained nurses.  They have extensive experience in caring for sick and premature babies.

Your contribution  

Your duties will include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Identify potential referrals to the NHITH, both from NICU, PNW and W@S.

  • Interviews families prior to transfer to NHITH, explaining the NHITH Service and what the service offers (Home Tube feeding, Oxygen Therapy at Home and Phototherapy at Home). Advocates and facilitates communication between the patient/family and the multidisciplinary health team

  • Liaise with community based services, including Maternal Child Health Nurses and General Practitioners

  • Documents patient care activities in the home which is consistent with the standards of the Royal Women's Hospital and HITH.

  • Conducts Risk Assessment for each referral, implementing controls and communicates to the Manager any areas of concern. Participates in the review and formulation of HITH policies and procedures.

  • Liaise with the Maternity Services – Postnatal Ward, Postnatal Hospital in the Home Service regarding possible transfer of babies to the Neonatal HITH as well as Breast Feeding Services

Essential Criteria

  • Registered Nurse Div. 1

  • Postgraduate Course Neonatal Nursing or equivalent

  • Current Victorian Driving License
