We are seeking savvy and adaptable commercial lawyers to join our team as Senior Solicitors in the Victorian Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions.

About the role

The positions are members in the Commercial Law Unit, which sits within the Legal and Legislation Branch. Our role is to provide high quality legal and legislative advice and services on a broad range of matters across the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions. The Department covers a diverse range of portfolios: Trade and Investment, Cultural and Creative Economy, Regional Development, Employment programs, Tourism, Sports and Major Events, Small Business, Agriculture, Mining and Resources, Local Government and Precincts and Suburbs.

The type of legal issues you will deal with are predominantly commercial and contractual matters, administrative law matters, including dispute resolution and other issues arising from the administration of portfolio legislation and for a diverse client group including regional staff, policy officers and administrative decision makers.

Key Accountabilities

  • Draft and review a range of legal documentation, including agreements, instruments, manage highly sensitive and complex issues, and conduct negotiations to settle documentation.
  • Provide authoritative and strategic advice on complex and sensitive legal, legislative and policy issues and proposals.
  • Manage delivery of legal and legislative services, including provision of legal services by external providers to ensure high quality advice and value for money.
  • Brief and instruct counsel or external solicitors in complex or sensitive matters.
  • Contribute to the development of the Commercial Law team through staff meetings and supporting the development, review and maintenance of precedent documentation and matter management systems.

About you

We welcome applications from commercial lawyers with in-house, government or private law firm experience. To succeed in the role, you will need:

  • Experience in negotiation and drafting a wide range of complex legal documentation particularly in the commercial context.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide strategic and authoritative advice on legal and commercial issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to liaise effectively and work collaboratively with key stakeholders and to provide advice to the senior executive and Ministers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision and in a team environment.
  • Ability to work constructively and effectively, managing competing priorities, working within strict timelines, and delegating and collaborating with other members of the team.
