Selection Criteria

Role

Monday to Friday 9.00am - 3.30pm

Undertakes routine tasks that are usually carried out under close supervision and direction.  Work that carries some degree of independence will generally involve a limited number of tasks performed on a regular basis where priorities are clear, procedures are well established and direction is readily available.

Work has little scope for deviation. Problems can usually be solved by reference to well documented procedures and instructions and clearly established practices.  Deviation from established procedures will require reference to others for guidance and direction.  Assistance is readily available when problems arise.  An experienced employee at range 1 will exercise limited judgement within clearly defined guidelines and well established practices that relate specifically to the tasks performed.

Does not carry responsibility for the work of others.  More experienced employees will provide basic guidance and advice to others relating to tasks within the work area.

An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor.  Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employee's position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

Qualification requirements do not operate at range 1.  Certification requirements may be required to legally perform specific tasks - e.g. driver's licence, first aid, safe food handling.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the exchange of information between the community and the school.
  • Assist with the liaison and communication between parents, teachers, other staff and members of the wider school community.
  • This is a classroom position. The applicant will be expected to share with the panel their capabilities in managing a range of student needs including severe behaviour disorder, etc.

Conditions of Employment

This vacancy is specifically linked to Student Support Funding and is ongoing. If the funding reduces or ceases during the first seven years of employment, employment may cease subject to the provision of at least 12 weeks’ notice.

Location Profile

Southern Cross Primary School is situated in the South Eastern Suburb of Endeavour Hills, 30 kms from Melbourne.. Our school has a full time staff of 20: 2.0 Principal Class, 1 Learning Specialist, 0.5 Leading Teacher, 13 Teachers (4 range 2.0 and 9 range 1.0), and 8 Education Support Staff.  

 

Demographic change has seen our enrolments maintained at an average of approximately 200 students since 2017.  We have a diverse community catering for approximately 38 nationalities. Southern Cross Primary School is a friendly, caring school community that aims to facilitate a high standard of academic learning, nurture individuality, challenge, and understand all of our students.

 

Southern Cross Primary School’s Individual Education Plans, accelerated learning programs and special support resourcing caters for the abilities of all students. We use Professional Learning Community practices to guide the implementation of our learning and teaching. Our PLC teams have concentrated on defining the lesson purpose, teacher moderation and judgement and clear assessment strategies and consistent implementation of the instructional model. Our programs continue to be a whole school approach from Prep to Year 6 with the inclusion of the parent community. The school community is consistently kept up to date with new directions we take with our teaching and learning through Compass and school website. Both parents and students benefit from these forms of communication.  We have also established Instagram and Facebook pages to engage with our wider community and prospective parents.

 

Southern Cross Primary School has implemented highly successful teaching and learning practices, including but not limited to, ‘7 Steps to Writing Success’, a SCPS Reading Guide, SMART Spelling and Top Ten Maths Resources. The school is currently participating in the Primary Mathematics Specialist Program (PMSS).  We use a range of standardised assessments, including Essential Assessment, to assist us in moderation and triangulation of data to form strong teacher judgement of student achievement. We are currently reviewing the Literacy Instructional Model and pedagogy in line with the Science of Reading and the Writing Revolution.
