Selection Criteria

1. Ability to work with classroom teachers and the Student Support Centre staff to help modify work for students.

2. Ability to be able to demonstrate a sensitive but firm approach and show a high level of skill in the management of student behaviour and understanding of individual needs.

3. Ability to work as part of a team, demonstrating initiative and support in the general classroom and on planned individual programs and during yard supervision as required.

4. Ability to demonstrate good communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people including teachers, parents and students.

Undertakes routine tasks that are usually carried out under close supervision and direction.  Work that carries some degree of independence will generally involve a limited number of tasks performed on a regular basis where priorities are clear, procedures are well established and direction is readily available.

Work has little scope for deviation. Problems can usually be solved by reference to well documented procedures and instructions and clearly established practices.  Deviation from established procedures will require reference to others for guidance and direction.  Assistance is readily available when problems arise.  An experienced employee at range 1 will exercise limited judgement within clearly defined guidelines and well established practices that relate specifically to the tasks performed.

Does not carry responsibility for the work of others.  More experienced employees will provide basic guidance and advice to others relating to tasks within the work area.

An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor.  Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employee's position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

Qualification requirements do not operate at range 1.  Certification requirements may be required to legally perform specific tasks - e.g. driver's licence, first aid, safe food handling.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with colleagues (other Aides and teaching staff).
  • Develop a relationship with students.
  • Helping students with organisation so students can meet deadlines.
  • Assist in student engagement and learning.
  • Ensure learning for students is safe, effective, engaging and meaningful.
  • Accompany student to more suitable working place if needed.
  • Assist in developing a respectful and inclusive classroom.
  • Know the student - the triggers, the learning style, reason for funding etc.
  • Use a consistent, sensitive approach in the managing of student behaviour.
  • Work as part of a team.
  • Attending weekly Aide meetings and SSGs.
  • Contribute in SSGs.
  • Attending professional development and inform team members in next Aide meeting.
  • Be an advocate for the students.
  • Help the student/s do their work without doing it for them.
  • Help plan ILAs and give reminders for due dates.
  • Keep up to date with technology and how it can help students eg Google Classrooms, BSE programs and assistive technology.
  • Have regular contact with Group Advisor re equipment, behaviour, organisation etc.
  • Have regular contact with home via email, text or call for positive feedback and/or concerns.
  • Have regular contact with teacher re content, modification of lessons.

Bendigo South East College is a 7-10 secondary school in regional Victoria.

 

The College encourages the pursuit of excellence by all members of our learning community. A comprehensive, curriculum is offered to all students based on the Victorian F-10 Framework. Students at Years 8, 9 and 10 have some choice in their subject selections, including specialisms in sports (ADP) and the arts (ACA) and at Year 10, VCE and VET subjects.
