The Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) is an independent statutory authority responsible for preparing and conducting criminal prosecutions in Victoria on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Matters prosecuted by the DPP and the OPP involve serious crimes or matters that are of significance to the fair and effective operation of the Victorian criminal justice system. The OPP consists of the Solicitor for Public Prosecutions and a staff of approximately 465 providing legal and corporate support to the DPP, the Chief Crown Prosecutor and Crown Prosecutors in the exercise of their independent roles in the criminal justice system.

Junior Solicitor (Full Time, Fixed Term – various positions)

The Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) have a number of opportunities for Junior Solicitors across our Legal Practice. 

The Junior Solicitor role is designed to attract solicitors who have exposure to the criminal jurisdiction or are interested in establishing and consolidating a strong criminal practice skill base through the preparation and conduct of criminal litigation, particularly at the Magistrates' and County Court level.

These positions are fixed term for a period of up to 12 months, flexible working arrangements including working from home options are available. To be considered for this position candidates must be admitted to practice by 30 October 2022.

About the Role:

Junior Solicitors at the OPP will be exposed to a variety of cases of minimal complexity across and are required to prepare/instruct on straight forward summary prosecutions, committals, plea hearings, trials, appeals and other hearings in the Magistrates' Court and County Court.

As an ideal candidate you will:

  • Be passionate about helping us achieve our vision to make a positive difference to the community through the justice system;
  • Have Knowledge of Criminal Law and Procedure and the Law of Evidence as well as other relevant legislation;
  • Possess high level interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise effectively with relevant stakeholders such as OPP staff, Crown Prosecutors, complainants, witnesses, police, counsel and members of the public.

The positions are based in Melbourne, however some regional travel (under supervision) is a requirement of the Junior Solicitor position.  A vehicle and overnight accommodation are both provided as required.
