  • Victoria's highest court is seeking an experienced criminal lawyer to assist with management of criminal appeals
  • Legal and operational focus - ongoing - full time
  • VPS Grade 4 - Melbourne location

The Supreme Court of Victoria is the highest court in Victoria and comprises the Court of Appeal and the Trial Division. The Court of Appeal determines criminal and civil applications/ appeals against decisions of lower courts.

Lawyers within the Court of Appeal directly support the Judges of the Court of Appeal in the preparation and management of criminal cases to resolution. They do so through actively and intensively managing matters assigned to them from commencement to completion. They are responsible for ensuring that matters in the criminal appellate jurisdiction at the Supreme Court are dealt with in the most efficient way possible. They are also the central contact point for parties and other stakeholders in each matter.

Court of Appeal Lawyers work closely with the Judges of Appeal to make sure each Judge is equipped with all the relevant information to make a decision. This may include preparing a summary of facts and issues arising in an appeal; using sound reasoning skills to make recommendations; and undertaking legal research in evolving areas of law that create precedent in Victoria.

To be successful in the role you should be able to demonstrate high level written communication, attention to detail, interpersonal and organisation/ planning skills. You must have tertiary qualifications in law and be admitted to practice. Post admission experience in criminal law is highly desirable.

This is an ongoing position available from 14th August 2021.
