An exciting opportunity for experienced and motivated Lawyer's to join Victoria Legal Aid with a focus on mental health and disability law.

  • One part time (0.8FTE) ongoing and one full time maximum term position (12 months)
  • Salary commensurate with experience, range: $74,361 - $95,041 (pro rata) plus superannuation

About the role:
Victoria Legal Aid's Mental Health and Disability Law team provides legal advice and representation in relation to laws that impact the liberty, dignity and autonomy of people with a mental health diagnosis or cognitive or neurological disability.
In this role you will act as an advocate providing legal advice and representation to clients in civil law matters, with a focus on mental health and disability law. You may also contribute to community engagement, community and professional legal education and law reform initiatives.

You will also develop and maintain collaborative relationships with Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) staff, including non-legal advocates in the Independent Mental Health Advocacy service (IMHA), court and tribunal staff, mental health and disability service providers and other advocacy and support organisations to deliver comprehensive responses to clients, and work to improve access to justice.

About you:
You are an experienced lawyer in civil law and relevant court and tribunal procedures and possess a strong knowledge of or practical experience in mental health and disability law. You have excellent interpersonal skills and have the capacity to positively engage with clients who experience social and economic disadvantage and to provide legal advice within limited time constraints. Your collaborative approach and ability to foster a cooperative and supportive team environment will be crucial to your success in this role.
