About us

The Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) registers and records in perpetuity, the significant life events of Victorians.

The core responsibility of Adoption Services (AS) is to find families for children in need. BDM and AS work with Aboriginal customers, stakeholders and communities to provide culturally safe and sensitive services and products.

About the role

The Manager, Aboriginal Engagement role sits within the Integrity and Community Partnership portfolio. The primary focus of this position is to improve awareness of, and access to, BDM and AS services across Victoria's Aboriginal communities. The work involves direct community outreach, policy and program development and proactive stakeholder engagement (including the development, management and strategic direction of BDM's Strong identity, strong spirit campaign and the next Coolamon Strategy).

As the Manager, Aboriginal Engagement, you will:

  • actively developing, nurturing and maintaining networks, strong relationships and linkages with Aboriginal stakeholders and customers to influence views and build support for BDM and AS services
  • forging strong connections across the department and engaging with and influence key stakeholders to facilitate self-determining approaches
  • providing project management, leadership, advice and guidance
  • managing BDM's strong identity, strong spirit campaign and associated community outreach framework to promote awareness and access to BDM and AS services and products.

This role is also responsible for the management of policy and projects in relation to BDM and AS Aboriginal products and services and for developing and leading staff.

This is an Aboriginal Designated Position, classified under 'special measures' of section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010. Only Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are eligible to apply.

About you

As our ideal candidate, you will have:

  • demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Victorian Aboriginal community, involving society, culture and the issues impacting on it
  • demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with members of the Victorian Aboriginal Community
  • demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to identify, develop and implement new policies, programs and initiatives
  • an ability to quickly acquire knowledge of policies, procedures, services and systems including Registry products (essential).
