About the business unit

The Aboriginal Justice group of the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) is committed to driving systemic change in the justice system, to connect, support and deliver better outcomes for the Aboriginal community. The group works in partnership with Traditional Owners and the Victorian Aboriginal community to embed the principles of self-determination in the justice sector.

The Truth and Justice Response Unit is a new unit that will lead the coordination of the department's responses to inquiries from the Yoorrook Justice Commission and will lead proactive and responsive legislative and system reform opportunities across the Justice and Community Safety sector that aligns with the Commission's mandate.

 

About the role

Reporting to the Director Truth and Justice Response Unit, the Manager Policy and System Reform will lead a small team to consider how the department can apply lessons from truth-telling to reform legislation and justice systems to improve outcomes for Aboriginal people. The Manager will also have a strong role in driving priorities to embed Aboriginal Justice considerations across departmental systems, policies and processes thorough strong internal engagement.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Manage, support and develop a small team to deliver high quality outcomes within set objectives, timelines and budgetary constraints.
  • Ensure the team delivers on requirements and processes against key performance indicators and provide regular reports on activities and outputs.
  • Have a demonstrated understanding of the Victorian Government's commitment to Aboriginal self-determination and be able to identify and deliver measurable outcomes that align with the overarching Aboriginal self-determination agenda.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Excellent knowledge of Cabinet processes and Government decision-making processes.
  • Excellent knowledge of Aboriginal culture and society and understanding of historical and contemporary issues relating to Aboriginal Victorians.
  • Demonstrated experience in advocacy and delivering policy and legislative reform through community consultation and targeted engagement.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Victorian Justice and Community Safety systems
