About the Team

As a part of this DoT team, The Media Lead is responsible for developing and implementing communications and issues management strategies to support DoT's objectives, particularly in supporting the work of Road Safety Victoria.

The role develops strong relationships across the business and supports the Head of Media through timely responses to media enquiries, preparation of communications material and the identification of reputational threats for DoT across the public transport sector. The role is also required to develop proactive opportunities and events to enhance the reputation of Victoria's public transport network.

About the Opportunity

  • Respond to media enquiries promptly while opportunities to promote transport initiatives are identified proactively and developed into successful media stories which promote the work of DoT to the Victorian public.
  • Ensure DoT's executive team and the Minister's office are kept updated on emerging communications and media issues providing robust, strategic advice to mitigate impacts
  • Apply highly developed written communications skills to produce and review accurate, timely, easily understood and consistent messaging to ensure DoT's position and key messages are reflected in media coverage.
  • Negotiating with and influencing key internal and external stakeholders, including the media, senior managers and the Minister's Office in the management of emerging media and reputational issues.
  • Developing, implementing to ensure the adherence to media policies, procedures, regulations, operations and systems to ensure appropriate approvals are obtained for media and communications material.
  • Coordinate and delegate work for members of the media team to balance the day to day demands with longer term priorities effectively. Lead, manage, motivate and develop employees in the media relations and issues management team to provide a high level of service to internal and external stakeholders, ensuring media and Minister's Office deadlines are met.
  • Developing social media content to support and extend campaigns delivered through traditional media channels.

About You

  • Hold a Tertiary qualification in communications, public relations, journalism or equivalent or experience in a communications or journalism role
  • Have proven experience and track record working independently in a fast-paced media environment with the ability to work calmly under pressure, collaborating well when working on decisions and initiatives
  • Be able to demonstrate the ability to draft and proof-read written media materials to a high standard and to tight deadlines, including media releases, Q&As and communications strategies
  • Experience to develop and manage effective relationships with journalists, subject matter experts and executives within the Department, other agencies and Ministerial advisers.
  • Understanding and interest in transport, particularly road safety, and a desire to promote the Department's work through traditional and social media.
  • Have the ability to identify and manage issues and risks that could impact on organisational reputation or achievement of strategic objectives.
  • Possess the ability to manage events to successfully deliver positive communications outcomes and promote organisational reputation by providing expert advice on strategic media opportunities.
  • Experience in monitoring, managing and plan resources and team activities to ensure effective alignment of goals to achieve business outcomes.
