The WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza is one of the 5 WHO (World Health Organisation) designated Centres that is involved in human influenza virus analysis and vaccine recommendations, as well as having interests in other respiratory viruses (such as RSV and SARS-CoV-2) and has operated since 1992.

We are looking for passionate and dedicated individual to lead the bioinformatics group at the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza (WHOCCRRI), VIDRL. This is a Full Time ongoing position, working 80 hours per fortnight, based at The Doherty Institute in Parkville, Melbourne.

Your new role:

• Supervise and lead a small bioinformatics group, overseeing the operation, development and troubleshooting of existing sequence pipelines for NGS data analysis, as well as developing new pipelines for NGS data analysis when required.


• Assist in preparation/oversee analysis for weekly internal reports and biannual WHO meetings or virtual meetings as required.


• Perform/oversee the prompt submission of sequence data generated at the Centre to databases such as GISAID/NCBI.


• Provide training in bioinformatics skills to other members at the Centre, post-graduate students and international scientists.

About you:

• You hold University BSc and a PhD specialising in either genetics/microbiology/immunology/virology (or a similar discipline), and have a minimum of 4 years (Grade 3) or 8 years (Grade 4) of relevant experience.


• You have proven experience with NGS data processing and are able to fully utilise web-based bioinformatics sites and other resources e.g. NCBI, GISAID, ViPR (BV-BRC).


• You are skilled in phylogenetic analysis and interpretation and have proven experience analysis large sequencing datasets.


• You have good knowledge of the fundamentals of molecular virology.
