About the department:

The role is under the Continuing Care Division, which includes inpatient services at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital and Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre. The Repatriation wards include two 28-bed Rehabilitation/Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) wards (Wards 11 & 12), a 24-bed Acute GEM unit (Ward 10), and a further inpatient unit (Ward 9) incorporating an 8 bed Cognitive Assessment and Management (CAM) Program and 16 GEM beds.

Continuing care also oversees the Better@Home-Subacute program, Aged Care Assessment Service (ACAS), Transition

Care Program and the and integrated Health Independence Program (HIP, including Older Persons’  Complex Care/OPCC), Hospital in the Home (HITH), and Residential InReach services (formerly Outreach/ROS), and Medical and Cognitive Research Unit (MCRU).

About the role:

  • This role will provide support for the Secure Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) patients on Ward 9, including people with dementia with responsive behaviour (also known as behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia) delirium and other forms of cognitive changes. 
  • There will be a strong emphasis on delivering person-centred care, and delineating the goals of treatment in consultation with the person and their medical treatment decision makers
  • The Dementia Care Registrar will work alongside consultant geriatricians with additional support from aged psychiatry/consultant-liaison psychiatry teams
  • The registrar will also be involved with review and care of people with dementia and cognitive impairment in other community and hospital settings, e.g. acute wards, InReach and B@H-subacute
  • There is also potential for rotation to Memory Clinic, and/or our Medical and Cognitive Research Unit (MCRU) which is a world leader in conduct of dementia research and clinical trials
  • The role is accredited for physician training (e.g. geriartric medicine, general medicine)
  • Applicants can apply for 6 months (Feb-July 2024, August-Jan 2025) or 12 months (Feb 2024-Jan 2025) 

To be successful in this role you must:

  • Hold a commitment to Austin Health values 
  • Be registered as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Note that eligible applicants will be assisted through this process if not currently registered. 
  • Have a minimum of three years’ post-graduate experience as a medical practitioner
  • Have completed FRACP examinations (desirable but not essential)
