Medical Scientist

The Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL) is a leading Australian infectious diseases reference laboratory located in Melbourne, Victoria. VIDRL is part of the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (the Doherty).

The Doherty is a joint venture between Melbourne Health and the University of Melbourne. VIDRL provides the Victorian Department of Health with virology, mycology, parasitology and mycobacteria public health reference laboratory services, including surveillance, outbreak investigations, reference testing and research. VIDRL also performs diagnostic testing, mainly in virology, for Victorian hospitals.

Your new role:

You  will support VIDRL as a medical scientist, providing rapid-turnaround diagnostic pathology and whole genome sequencing for a broad range of pathogens of clinical importance. Your responsibilities will include

  • To conduct work at PC2 level and comply with all Department of Agriculture, Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR), National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) and ISO 15189 conditions.
  • To perform nucleic acid extractions and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays.
  • Prepare libraries for whole genome sequencing on both Illumina and Oxford Nanopore sequencers.
  • Maintain and keep meticulous records of all experiments, procedures, and equipment logs – manage laboratory inventory and ordering.

About you:

  • Have experience working within a collaborative research or diagnostic laboratory environment.
  • Have had exposure to working with next generation sequencing technologies and techniques.
  • Passionate about improving public health initiatives and a keen interest in exploring new technologies.
  • Possess excellent communication skills and a passion for continued professional development.
  • Have excellent attention to details and effective time management skills.
