Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across 3 campuses in the northeast of Melbourne and state-wide. Austin Health is world-renowned for its research and specialist work in cancer, liver transplantation, spinal cord injuries, neurology, endocrinology, mental health and rehabilitation.


An exciting opportunity currently exists for an enthusiastic and highly experienced Nurse Unit Manager to join our Gastroenterology, Transplant and General Surigal team on Ward 8 West.


Ward 8 West is a 32 bed acute surgical ward located within the Surgical Anaesthesia Procedural Medicine Division and based on the Austin Hospital site, in the Austin Tower. The ward accommodates hepatobiliary, liver /intestinal transplant and gastroenterology patients. Approximately 2,300 patients are admitted each year, with about 70% being emergency admissions and 10% being transfers from the intensive care unit.

  • Relevant Post-Graduate Qualification in Nursing or equivalent

  • Substantial clinical experience in area of speciality

  • Previous management experience

  • Patient-centred approach to evidence based care delivery

  • Demonstrated knowledge of professional standards

  • Knowledge of legal and ethical requirements

  • Ability to implement budget management processes

  • Demonstrated ability to use clinical information systems

  • Demonstrated leadership ability

  • Demonstrated experience in Human Resource Management

  • Commitment to quality, best practice and environmental safety

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form

  • Ability to problem solve in a variety of complex situations

  • Ability to build a dynamic team which works effectively within a multidisciplinary environment

  • Ability to initiate and manage clinical projects

  • Be an active participant of a relevant clinical specialist organisation.

  • A sound understanding of information technology including clinical systems, applications relevant to the Management of rostering and risk management reporting or as required for the role and/or department.

  • Experience and proficiency in keyboarding and Computer skills.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading quality initiatives

  • Ability to identify opportunities for process redesign and to support/ coach staff in the implementation of redesign projects and activities

  • Broad base knowledge of professional issues in nursing.

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Victorian Public Health care system and resource allocation.

  • Demonstrated capacity to undertake/support nursing research, publication and public presentation
