2022 Principal Registrar / Senior Registrar, Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Fixed Term for 12 months (6 month term options available) – 7th February 2022 to 5th February 2023
Full Time/Part Time

The Senior Registrars in Obstetrics and Gynaecology are responsible for the provision of excellent clinical care to women of the Royal Women's Hospital and their babies and families.

Senior Registrar positions are available to trainees who will have completed 4 years ITP training. Preferred trainees will have successfully completed RANZCOG written and oral exam.

The Women's is committed to providing the best clinical experience; rotations are regularly evaluated and may vary from year to year.

Rotations for 2022 may include:


Complex caesarean section list, ultrasound, ANC, specialist clinics (i.e. Fetal Medicine Unit, Diabetes, Pregnancy Management, Multiple Pregnancy, Recurrent Miscarriage, WADs), Wards/Pregnancy Day Care and Birth Centre.


Laparoscopic surgery, Sexual Health (including Abortion and Contraceptive Services), general gynaecology (including Ambulatory Gynaecology Surgery, Menopause, Vulval/Dermatology, Infertility), Frances Perry and Epworth Freemasons.

As the Women's is committed to ongoing professional development of all employees a wide range of clinical and audit meetings and specific teaching sessions is provided.

The role of the Principal Registrar (in addition to his/her clinical duties) is:

  • Liaison between Management, Senior Medical Staff and Junior Medical Staff

  • Delegation and co-ordination of Junior Medical Staff representation on relevant RWH Committees

  • Liaison with Management on JMS HR matters

  • Provision of advice and assistance with JMS Rosters as necessary

  • Co-ordination and oversight of mentoring and pastoral care for Junior Medical Staff

  • Assistance with Junior Medical Staff education and training co-ordination

  • Involvement in the Quality and Safety meeting and focus groups

  • Representation at the monthly meetings as instructed by the Clinical Directors.

The Principal Registrars provide feedback to the clinical medical staff and training supervisors on the training and education provided at the Women’s for the Junior Medical Staff, and also have an important broad oversight role in mentoring and wellbeing.

The Principal Registrar positions are ideally suited to a trainee in their final year.  These positions allow for an opportunity for independent operating and the establishment of consultant level skills.

Following discussions between RANCOG and all major hospitals within Victoria, it has been decided that interviews will occur within a fortnight window preceding the offers of employment being made.

The Classification and Salary scale will be dependent on experience and you will be appointed and in accordance to the Australian Medical Association (Victoria) Doctors in Training Agreement 2013 and its successor Agreement – AMA Victoria – Victorian Public Health Sector – Doctors in Training Enterprise Agreement 2018-2021.
