About the role

The Peer Support Worker (Consumer) will draw upon their personal lived experience of caring for someone who has a 'mental illness' to support the consumers who are receiving service from Grampians Mental Health and Wellbeing Service (GMHWS).

Peer support work focusses on building mutual and reciprocal relationships where understanding and emotional, social, spiritual and physical wellbeing and recovery are possible. This is highly skilled and specialised work which requires training and ongoing supervision from experienced peer support workers.

Key Responsibilities

You will:

  • Contributes effectively to clinical review processes and team activities and effectively works within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Assists people receiving service from GMHWS to be aware of their rights and responsibilities.
  • Contributes effectively to the ongoing use of recovery orientated practice
  • Provides orientation to people receiving service
  • Assists relevant staff to provide information to people receiving service

Skills and experience

You will have:

  • A lived experience of mental ill-health and treatment within a mental health service
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Certificate IV in Peer Support or Mental Health or willingness to undertake.
  • A current driver's licence.
  • Completion of or willingness to complete Intentional Peer Support Training.
