About the role:

This is an exciting opportunity to progress your career and obtain experience working as a Police Lawyer within Victoria Police. Victoria Police's Legal Services Department is enhancing its advocacy response in an effort to meet the expansion of court networks and jurisdictions across Victoria.

Victoria Police is seeking to meet this demand with a team of enthusiastic, skilled and dedicated Police Lawyers to appear in a range of areas including family violence intervention order applications and Drug Court, across multiple court jurisdictions. As the successful applicant, you will need to demonstrate an ability to handle a large case load ensuring you manage competing priorities effectively. This role offers an opportunity to tailor your skills to an array of matters that vary in complexity.  You will also require exceptional interpersonal skills as you will be required to work closely with other stakeholders.

Your duties will include:

  • Appearing as an advocate, caseload management and providing legal advice/information to a range of clients in the areas of Drug Court, family violence, criminal prosecutions, civil law, and other areas as directed.
  • Developing and maintaining collaborative relationships within Victoria Police. 
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders across agencies to ensure cooperative and proactive approaches to addressing community harm.
  • Regularly attending and appearing in the Magistrates' Court, Children's Court, therapeutic courts and as directed appearing in County Court Appeal matters. 
  • Managing participants within the Drug Court along with the prosecution of family violence intervention orders, criminal related matters, confiscations and proceeds of crime applications, firearms applications and licensing eligibility applications on behalf of Victoria Police. 
  • Managing Drug Court Participants into the Drug Court along with their progression whilst on the Drug Treatment Order (DTO).
  • Attending Drug Court for Case Conferences / Reviews along with screening suitable accused for a DTO and any subsequent cancelation application. 
  • Preparing Family Violence court lists in advance of hearing dates.  Attending court to conference affected family members, affected persons (victims), respondents and witnesses.
  • Liaising with legal representatives and court staff. 
  • Providing support and assistance to Senior and Supervising Lawyers in the management of more complex cases dealt with at the County Court and other jurisdictions.  You will also be required to provide professional guidance to Legal Support Officers as directed by your senior managers. 
  • Other duties as directed by the Unit Manager

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer.
  • Ability to work in a team and in a developing and emerging work environment.
  • A high level of resilience and emotional intelligence.

Requirements and relevant information:

  • The position is located at Dandenong Prosecutions Unit in Dandenong.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
  • This position may require you to work outside normal hours.
  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
  • As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity.  However given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Department.  This supports the Departments commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.
