About the role:

Victoria Police is seeking a skilled and dedicated advocate to appear on behalf of the organisation primarily in the Family Violence jurisdiction. You may also be called upon to prosecute a range of matters arising within the therapeutic, protective and criminal jurisdictions of the Magistrate's Court, Children's Court and, in some cases, the County Court. As the successful applicant, you will need to demonstrate an ability to manage busy court lists and competing priorities effectively whilst managing your files, as well as providing administrative support and advice to police members.

The role offers an opportunity to tailor your skills to an array of matters that vary in complexity.  You will be expected to perform caseload management and offer legal advice and information to a range of clients.  You may have to work closely with external stakeholders to ensure cooperative and proactive approaches to management of files.

Your duties will include:

  • The day to day management of files
  • Administrative Support and Data Entry
  • Appearing in the Magistrate's Court, Children's Court and potentially higher courts on behalf of Victoria Police
  • Maintaining statistics and records for relevant matters to assist in the reporting processes
  • Appearing in intervention order and criminal matters in the Magistrate's Court and/or Children's Court as required

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer (or eligibility for admission)
  • Ability to work in a team, and individually
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work unsupervised
  • High level of resilience and emotional intelligence
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills
  • High level understanding and experience as a court advocate
  • A current and valid Drivers' Licence

Requirements and relevant information:

  • Two (2) x full-time, ongoing positions available.
  • These positions are located at Ringwood Prosecutions Unit, 41-43 Ringwood St, Ringwood.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
  • The successful candidates will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
  • In accordance with the Acting Chief Health Officer's Direction – COVID-19 Mandatory Vaccination (Workers) Directions, you are required to be fully vaccinated (this includes a booster vaccination) and your employment with Victoria Police is subject to proof of vaccination.
  • As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity.  However, given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Department.  This supports the Departments commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.
