About the role:

We are seeking the addition of an enthusiastic, skilled and dedicated lawyer to perform a role within the Counter Terrorism Legal Unit (CTLU), Legal Services Department.  The CTLU is a legal practice unit comprising both sworn and VPS lawyers who specialize in Counter Terrorism (CT) related law and legal policy. The role of CTLU is to assist in providing an effective response to terrorism incidents through the application of the Terrorism (Community Protection) Act 2003 and other Acts, and to provide expert legal advice, support and training to the Counter Terrorism Command (CTC) of Victoria Police.  CTLU also play an important role in driving legislative reform relating to CT and related legislation.

Your duties will include:

  • Providing operational legal support to investigators and other members of CTC
  • Assisting in the preparation of legal advice in connection with but not limited to, the Terrorism (Community Protection) Act 2003 (Vic), Surveillances Devices Act (Vic) & (Cth) and the Crimes Act (Vic) & (Cth)
  • Legislative reform and legal policy work in connection with, but not limited to the above legislation
  • Instructing counsel in both Federal and State jurisdictions
  • Engaging with internal and external stakeholders on various CT related matters
  • Facilitate professional legal training seminars
  • Provision of administrative support to CTLU as required.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form
  • Well-developed liaison and organisation skills
  • Sound legal research skills
  • Willingness to deliver presentations and training
  • Ability to work under limited supervision and within a small team in a professional and mature environment
  • Flexibility to work overtime when required or be recalled to duty

Requirements and relevant information:

  • The is one (1) fixed term full time position available until 30 June 2023.
  • This position is located at the Victoria Police Centre, 311 Spencer Street, Docklands.
  • The successful applicant will be required to undergo National Security Vetting, achieve and maintain a security classification as determined by the Department Head. To achieve this, applicants must be an Australian Citizen.
  • Must be admitted to practice as an Australian Lawyer (hold a restricted or unrestricted Legal Practising Certificate or eligible to obtain a certificate)
  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
  • In accordance with organisational policy, all Victoria Police employees are required to be fully vaccinated (including a booster vaccination) against COVID-19 or hold a valid medical exception. As such your employment with Victoria Police is subject to providing evidence of your vaccination status.
  • As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity. However, given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Department.  This supports the Departments commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.
