  • Usual hours of work: Full Time (flexibility may be available)
  • Usual work location: 121 Exhibition Street Melbourne (flexibility may be available)

The position of Policy Adviser - Economist forms a part of the Rural and Regional Victoria Policy and Strategy branch within the Rural and Regional Victoria Group. The Regional Policy and Strategy Branch provides policy and strategy leadership, coordinating across government to develop the evidence base, ideas, knowledge, policies and programs that support the Victorian Government's commitment to rural and regional Victoria. The group delivers research and analysis to support regional policy, and manages strategic relationships across and outside government, including with the Regional Partnerships.

The Policy Adviser contributes to key strategic projects aimed at improving the productivity and competitiveness of Victoria's regions, supporting the growth of local industries and stimulating the creation of jobs, addressing entrenched disadvantage and helping regional communities to thrive. The team is focussed on economic analysis, data analytics, economic modelling and the provision of evidence-based policy advice to improve the effectiveness of the Victorian Government's regional economic development policies.

The position is well suited to highly motivated professionals with a background in strategy, economic policy and modelling. The successful applicant will: be comfortable working on new and diverse issues with uncertain information; have strong analytical and conceptual skills; well-developed communication and stakeholder management skills; and experience in preparing, managing and analysing economic data and evidence.

It is expected that the Policy Adviser will work flexibly across the division depending on the workload and nature of projects being undertaken.

This is an exciting and influential role in a newly created team that sits at the heart of driving regional policy and coordination in the Victorian Government.

The key accountabilities of the role will include:

  • Undertake high quality and rigorous analysis, briefings, submissions and correspondence on a wide range of economic policy issues, often within very short time frames.
  • Support the management and maintenance of economic datasets and quantitative economic analysis to inform policy and strategic advice relating to regional development.
  • Participate in and support projects developing strategic advice on economic development policy and strategy, including the identification of opportunities for new policy directions or initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders across DJPR, Victorian and Commonwealth agencies, regulators, industry and wider communities.
  • Represent the Department in a range of forums including stakeholder working groups and provide support for senior Departmental representatives and Ministers in inter-departmental, inter-government and other meetings.

For a confidential discussion, please call Jessica Read, Director on 03 8392 6345.

Successful candidates will be required to undergo a National Police Records Check prior to commencing employment with the Department.
