Position Summary:

The COVID-19 vaccine immunisation program is one of the largest, most complex and high-profile immunisation programs ever attempted in Australia. It must reach all Victorians within a nationally agreed timeframe and will require close integration with the national framework and delivery through a complex arrangement of health services, community health, GPs and other providers.

The Principal Adviser will provide high level strategic support and advice to the Director, Commissioning and Logistics. The position will collaborate across the COVID-19 Response Division, with department executives and other senior staff, the Minister's office, relevant policy and program areas, and key external stakeholders to inform strategic options to achieve outcomes aligned with government policies and priorities.


  • Support and advise the Director or Executive Director (as applicable) of current and emerging issues in collaboration with relevant Leadership Teams and provide expert strategic advice on a range of issues.
  • Lead the development and implementation of processes and systems for the effective monitoring and coordination of departmental objectives. 
  • Provide timely, high-quality and accurate information and advice on issues related to a range of key stakeholders.
  • Contribute to effective project performance monitoring and continuous improvement processes in relation to government policies, objectives, priorities and reporting requirements.
  • Represent the Executive Director or branch on operational internal and external committees and meetings and promote a broader understanding of program and policy objectives.
  • Maintain an excellent understanding of issues impacting the human service sector, as well as Commonwealth and State legislative and policy directions. Proactively identify opportunities and manage risk.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders and senior staff and develop innovative strategies and methods which assist the department to deliver on key policies and initiatives.
  • Represent the department on internal and external committees and meetings and promote a broader understanding of policy objectives.
  • Provide intellectual leadership and foster innovative thinking.
  • Keep accurate and complete records of your work activities in accordance with legislative requirements and the department's records, information security and privacy policies and requirements.  
  • Take reasonable care for your own health and safety and for that of others in the workplace by working in accordance with legislative requirements and the department's occupational health and safety (OHS) policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate how the actions and outcomes of this role and work unit impact clients and the department's ability to deliver, or facilitate the delivery of, effective support and services.
