About the Team

DoT Legal provides legal, legislative, commercial and policy advice and support to the Secretary and Department in the achievement of the transport system vision, objectives and decision-making principles. The Public Law Branch is the first point of contact within DoT Legal for advice on administrative law issues, statutory interpretation, discrimination, human rights, litigation.

About the Opportunity

Principal Lawyers in the Public Law Branch are responsible for the provision of high quality legal advice, and the conduct and management of litigation (including working with external lawyers). The Principal Lawyer will also supervise the advice and management of matters by junior lawyers and assist with the development of public law capability in the Public Law Branch, DoT Legal and the Department. Principal Lawyers are expected to deliver outstanding client service and timely, clear and pragmatic legal advice.

About You

  • Demonstrated experience providing authoritative and highly influential legal advice on complex and sensitive legal issues relating to public law matters including litigation, statutory interpretation and administrative law.
  • Demonstrated experience running and managing litigation matters, particularly at the Magistrates' Court or similar forums.
  • Demonstrated ability to liaise effectively and work collaboratively with colleagues, managers and key stakeholders.
  • Well-developed written and oral communication, organisation and negotiation skills with ability to work within tight and often conflicting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and a strong record of delivering superior and timely outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and mentor junior staff.
