The Commission is an independent statutory body that promotes improvement in policies and practices affecting the safety and wellbeing of Victorian children and young people. It has a particular focus on vulnerable children and young people. The Commission is also the regulator for the Child Safe Standards and the Reportable Conduct Scheme. The Commission supports flexible and hybrid working models.

About the opportunity

Reporting to General Counsel, the Principal Legal Adviser will work closely with and provide support to the Principal Commissioner, the Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People, and senior members of the Commission in administering the reportable conduct scheme and child safe standards including:

  1. Providing authoritative advice on complex legal issues
  2. Preparing briefings, reports, submissions, legal documents and correspondence
  3. Identifying, analysing, raising awareness of and responding to emerging issues and  risks
  4. Managing legal proceedings
  5. Supporting the negotiation and implementation of inter-agency agreements with key government and non-government stakeholders
  6. Developing and maintaining relationships with co-regulators and other external stakeholders
  7. Representing the Commission on key government and non-government committees and bodies
  8. Developing close working relationships with Commission staff
  9. Maintaining an understanding of relevant Commonwealth and State law and legislative and policy reform directions
  10. Participating in strategic and operational planning workshops
  11. Actively modelling leadership attributes and behaviours and the Commission's values

 As our ideal candidate, you will have:

Essential

  • Legal qualifications – Current Australian practicing certificate which entitles practice in Victoria as an employee of a legal practice.
  • Knowledge of statutory interpretation and administrative law principles and practice

Desirable

  • Relevant tertiary qualification
  • Experience working in a regulatory environment
  • Experience in an area related to the safety and wellbeing of children and young people
