About the role:

The Legal Policy Unit is a small, busy team offering an outstanding quality of work, great diversity of issues and the opportunity to contribute to community safety. We are responsible for managing all law reform processes on behalf of Victoria Police, ensuring that a consistent and considered organisational position is presented on new or proposed legislative changes.

The main objectives of the unit are to:

  • assess, develop and manage internal requests for legislative change
  • consider legislative or policy proposals initiated outside Victoria Police and develop responses to external agencies and bodies
  • coordinate responses to Cabinet submissions
  • provide advice and support on legislative changes across Victoria Police.

We are currently seeking an experienced principal policy officer to work alongside another principal policy officer in overseeing the work of the team, supervising team members and undertaking a diverse range of work.  The position will report to the Manager - Legal Policy Unit, Policy & Legislation Division.

Your duties will include:

  • supervising and mentoring junior members of the Legal Policy Unit
  • managing portfolios of responsive and project work
  • assessing proposals for legislative change and coordinating, reviewing and drafting responses / submissions to a range of legislative change proposals
  • ensuring legislative trends are monitored and assessed against the strategic direction of Victoria Police
  • ensuring that written reports from the unit are of a high quality and deliver informed policy advice and options to the Victoria Police Executive.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • significant experience managing a large and demanding workload in a dynamic environment
  • leadership skills and experience managing and mentoring people or a small team
  • highly developed stakeholder management skills
  • extensive experience in providing specialist, technically complex legal policy advice to senior executives
  • extensive experience in preparing complex written reports and submissions for the executive level
  • problem solving skills that focus on providing solutions that are viable and evidenced based.

Requirements and relevant information:

  • One (1) full time - ongoing position available.  
  • The position is located at the Victoria Police Centre. 311 Spencer Street, Docklands.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
