The role of the principal is to lead and manage the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students in a community through the deployment of resources provided by the Department and the school community.
At the same time, the principal, as executive officer of the school council, must ensure that adequate and appropriate advice is provided to the council on educational and other matters, that the decisions of the council are implemented and that adequate support and resources are provided for the conduct of council meetings.
The principal is accountable for the overall management and development of the school within statewide guidelines and Government policies. A clear set of accountabilities, which distinguish their work from other members of the Teaching Service and the education community are set out in detail in the contract of employment.

To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class a person must have provisional or full registration from the Victorian Institute of Teaching. In addition, from 3 August 2020, to be eligible for employment in the principal class or teacher class, a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education program after 1 July 2016, must demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements. This condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian Initial Teacher Education program completed by the person.
To be eligible for appointment as a principal a person must either already be a Principal or have met the Victorian Aspiring Principal Assessment (VAPA) requirement as follows:
A person is not eligible for employment in the Teaching Service unless that person meets the vaccination requirements on commencement in the position.
Cobden Primary School, established in 1865, is committed to continuous improvement and achieving excellence in teaching and learning at every level. We are striving for high academic achievement in English and Maths. Our school has 19 staff in total. This number is broken into 1 principal class, 13 teachers and 5 educational support staff.
We provide quality learning programs in other curriculum areas. In 2021 our LOTE Program was implemented across the school. Indonesian was implemented from Prep- Yr 6. We were able to deliver Science across all Years levels through provision of a designated Science teacher. We also provided a comprehensive Health and Physical Education program which assists our children with developing healthy lifestyle choices. During 2021 Remote and Flexible Learning programs were enforced across the state. We were able to deliver R & F Learning via the compass platform. We felt that most children were able to achieve at the required level during 2021.
Our Student Well Being programs include: Student Well Being and Social Learning Program, Sporting Schools Australia and our Special Assembly Program. These programs and student Well Being are supported by strategies included in our Student Engagement and Well Being Policy. We are also very fortunate to have a student counsellor who works with our students. We enjoy support for our Program for Students with Disability ( PSD ) from our Network Psychologist and Speech Pathologist.
There is a strong partnership between parents and staff, with a high level of parent participation on school council, as classroom helpers, in fund-raising and social activities.
