We have a senior leadership opportunity for a highly experienced Principal Solicitor at Wage Inspectorate Victoria (the Inspectorate). The new role will sit within a soon-to-be-established Legal team at the Inspectorate.

The Inspectorate is a branch within Industrial Relations Victoria which is part of the Department of Premier and Cabinet. The Inspectorate enforces Victorian employment laws covering child employment, long service leave, and independent contractors in the transport and forestry sectors.

From 1 July 2021, the Inspectorate will become an independent statutory authority under the Wage Theft Act 2020. From this date, wage theft will be a criminal offence in Victoria.

The Principal Solicitor assists the Special Counsel in the provision of expert legal services within the Inspectorate, covering a broad range of legal, workplace relations, administrative and legislative matters. Another key aspect of this position is to build and manage a team of legal practitioners, through providing people leadership and developing and managing the day to day operational aspects of an in-house legal practice.

As the successful candidate you will hold deep experience and expertise in workplace law, combined with excellent legal, research and analytical skills and a demonstrated ability to translate complex legislation and policy to practical operational requirements. Prosecutorial experience from a regulatory or law enforcement position would also be highly regarded.

Note that the position will transfer to the Wage Inspectorate Victoria independent statutory authority upon commencement of the Wage Theft Act 2020 on 1 July 2021.

Please note: Due to COVID-19 restrictions, working remotely arrangements are in place.
