Work location: Melbourne | CBD

We are seeking a talented and passionate Project Officer to work within the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council's Ancestral Remains Unit.

This is a unique opportunity to work in new and innovative ways that recognise First Peoples as the self-determining drivers of Aboriginal affairs in Victoria. This role will contribute to the ground-breaking work of the Group in the areas of truth, treaty, self-determination and cultural rights.

The newly established First Peoples - State Relations Group supports an extensive program of priority work with First Peoples, applying a strong understanding of self-determination to our work practices and in providing clear and robust advice to the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Premier, Cabinet and senior executives within the Group.

As the Project Officer, you will be part of a small team, supporting the Council in fulfilling its responsibilities for Ancestral Remains and Secret or Sacred Objects as per the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006. You will undertake administrative tasks, including creating case files, and updating file notes and records management information systems.

You will assist in tasks associated with the repatriation of Ancestral Remains, and with the preparation of comprehensive reports, briefings and policy documents.

About you

As our ideal candidate, you will have:

  • the ability to liaise effectively with Traditional Owners, Registered Aboriginal Parties, land managers, government agencies and other stakeholders
  • excellent understanding of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 and the role of the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council as it relates to the management of Ancestral Remains and Secret and Sacred Objects
  • the ability to identify processes, tasks and resources required to achieve a goal and to effectively and efficiently undertake tasks and duties with minimal supervision
  • well developed organisational and time-management skills, and the ability to maintain precise records
  • the ability to produce reports, briefs and other written communication with clear, concise language in a prescribed format.

This is a designated position under section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010. Only Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people are eligible to apply for this position.

Working with us, you can make a difference not just in your career, but in the community where you work and live.

This position is only open to applicants with relevant rights to work in Australia.

How to apply

Apply before the advertised closing date. All applications should include:

  • a resume; and
  • a cover letter which addresses the key selection criteria (within three pages).
